UOB Preferred Platinum To Be Renamed UOB Preferred Card, Enhanced With 1-For-1 Offers
Author Avatar

UOB has announced that its existing UOB Preferred Platinum credit card will be renamed as the UOB Preferred credit card starting from 1 June 2023, along with the introduction of some updates to its benefits. Specifically, it will soon offer 1-for-1 deals for drinks at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBTL) outlets, as well as movie tickets at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC).

With this update, UOB Preferred cardholders will be able to enjoy one complimentary drink when they purchase any beverages from CBTL stores between Monday to Friday (complimentary drink must be of equivalent value or less). You’re entitled to one free drink per transaction per day.

In addition to that, cardholders who purchase GSC cinema tickets online (via website or mobile app) on Fridays will also be treated to one complimentary ticket – limited to one free ticket per transaction per day. Note, though, that some conditions apply; for instance, the offer is only applicable for the purchase of standard seats in a common cinema hall, and not for special seats (such as twin seats, Premiere Class seats, or tickets for screenings of premiere movies).

Children tickets and advance purchases, too, are not eligible for the offer. Additionally, the complimentary ticket will provide admission to the same movie as the paid ticket, and not for a separate screening.

If these benefits sound familiar, it’s because they were originally offered under the Citi Clear credit card – which has ceased accepting applications following Citi’s decision to exit the commercial banking scene in Malaysia and UOB’s subsequent acquisition of Citi’s Malaysian consumer banking business. With UOB currently undergoing an integration exercise, it has also, understandably, decided to revise and merge the benefits for some of its credit cards – including the UOB Preferred card.

Aside from the introduction of these 1-for-1 deals, the existing rewards points benefit for the UOB Preferred card remains unchanged. Cardholders will still earn 5x UNIRinggit for every RM1 spent on dining, entertainment, and grocery (capped at RM1,000 for each category), and 3x UNIRinggit for every RM1 spent on petrol and recurring transactions (capped at RM500 for petrol, unlimited for recurring transactions).

All other retail expenses, meanwhile, will earn you 1x UNIRinggit. Other privileges that you can also enjoy via the card include 0% interest easi-payment plans for overseas and education expenses.

Aside from that, no revisions have been announced for the minimum annual income requirement and annual fees of the UOB Preferred card as of yet, so we can assume that these, too, are unchanged (for now). You will need to be earning a minimum of RM40,000 per year in order to be eligible to apply for this card. Annual fees, meanwhile, stand at RM198 (principal card) and RM30 (supplementary card).
