Malaysian artist Red Hong Yi – who made her entry into the non-fungible token (NFT) market with the launch of the Meme Banknotes series back in mid-2021 – is now hosting a Memebank exhibition here in Kuala Lumpur. Taking place between 20 to 23 January 2022, you can experience the exhibition either in person or virtually.

Those who plan to enjoy the Memebank exhibition virtually can access the Memebank Virtual Exhibition anytime, anywhere (24/7) starting from 20 January 2022 (the site is currently still under construction, and should go live tomorrow). Meanwhile, if you prefer to visit in person, the physical exhibition will open its doors a day later on 21 to 23 January (10am to 6pm) at Bookmark@APW, Bangsar. Admittance is free, although entry is only by reservation.

Without doubt, the key highlights of the Memebank exhibition are the meme banknotes that Red Hong Yi had created and sold in the past year. The Meme Banknotes series kicked off in July 2021 with Red Hong Yi’s first piece, titled “Doge to the Moon” – which drew inspiration from the popular Doge meme and the Chinese Yuan currency, and sold for approximately RM328,000 on the Binance NFT Marketplace.

Since then, the artist has created and put five other Meme Banknotes up for auction, based off the Malaysian Ringgit, Singapore Dollar, Japanese Yen, British Pound, and US Dollar. All of these banknotes will be put up for display at the exhibition.

Aside from that, individuals who visit the exhibition in person will also get an up-close and personal view of the banknote printing process. According to the official website, Memebank “employees” will be conducting banknote printing during the exhibition, and visitors will have the chance to witness and learn more about the process of inking. This is on top of other attractions and services that you can check out at the event, including the Premier Lounges and the Memebank Platinum credit card.

To make things even more exciting, there are also exclusive merchandises that you can purchase during your visit. If you’re a fan of Red Hong Yi’s artwork and a collector, mini versions of all six Memebank banknotes will be made available for sale at the exhibition. Exclusive angpao packets, too, will be sold in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration.
