What is CIMB Motor Insurance all about?
The CIMB Motor Insurance provides comprehensive coverage for private vehicles registered in Malaysia, regardless of whether you drive a sedan, pickup truck or MPV. The policy covers loss or damage to your own vehicle due to accident, fire or theft, third party bodily injury and death, as well as third party property loss or damage.
If you drive a commercial vehicle, or if it’s registered to a company, you’ll need to write to Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad, the underwriter for this policy, for approval.
What are the highlights of this policy?
Unless you’re driving on a track or on a closed, controlled environment, getting into an accident rarely involves only your own car. You’ll likely damage private or public property as well as other vehicles on the road.
Fortunately, CIMB Motor Insurance covers liability for damage to other vehicles and property caused by the insured vehicle. This helps to offset some of the repair costs for both your car as well as the third-party’s vehicle, especially if you’re the one at fault.
Remember that doing so affects your No Claim Discount ( NCD), so if it’s a minor accident that might cost less than your NCD, you might want to just settle the fees on the spot with some cash.
Are there optional benefits I can add on?
No thanks to large trucks carrying sand for construction, constantly turning Malaysian roads into a challenging obstacle course full of bouncing rocks, going through a year of driving without some bumps and scratches on your car is close to impossible.
For an additional premium, you could add-on windscreen coverage which covers the breakage of glass in windscreens, front, rear and even side windows. In case you’re asking, the premium charged will be 15% of the amount insured for your windscreen. This coverage is particularly useful if your windscreen has a built-in rain detector, which is expensive and has to be replaced along with the windscreen.
Besides that, you could also get extra coverage for strikes, riots and civil commotions in case for whatever reason you wish to drive through Kuala Lumpur during Bersih rallies. If you’re in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, or you’re worried about flash floods in the city, you could also protect against damage to your car caused by floods, typhoons or storms, all for a small premium, of course.
Is there any criteria for my car to be eligible for coverage?
Your car is eligible for coverage if the market value is at least RM10,000 and is below 15 years old. As the insured person or driver, you’ll need to be between 25 to 65 years old. Drivers and insured persons below 25 or above 65 will require Allianz underwriter approval, or will incur additional fee on top of your premium.
If you have made any modifications to the car’s engine to enhance its performance or speed, you’ll also require Allianz underwriter approval, and you’ll likely be paying a higher premium as well. The same goes to sports and high performance cars. Any premium loading might be charged, but it will all be based on the risk assessment by CIMB.
Is there anything that the policy won’t cover?
This policy does not cover losses such as your own death or bodily injury in the event of a motor accident, and your liability claims from passengers in your vehicle. Unless you’ve added-on the Special Perils optional benefits, any loss, damage or liability arising from an act of nature such as floods, storms or landslides will not be covered.
