What is IKHLAS Comprehensive Private Car Takaful?
IKHLAS Comprehensive Private Car Takaful is a comprehensive motor takaful certificate issued by Takaful Ikhlas General Berhad. It covers your vehicle against loss or damage from accidents, fire, and theft, and protects you against legal liability to third parties for death, bodily injury, and property damage.
You can purchase online directly through Takaful IKHLAS, at their branches, or via their agents. Buying online through the direct channel qualifies you for a 10% rebate on your contribution.
The Shariah concepts applicable to this certificate
IKHLAS Private Car Comprehensive Plus Takaful operates under two Shariah concepts:
- Tabarru' is a donation made by all takaful participants into a shared Risk Fund. When any participant suffers a covered loss, claims are paid from this collective fund, the core principle of solidarity and mutual assistance in takaful.
- Wakalah is an agency contract. Takaful Ikhlas General Berhad is appointed as your agent (wakil) to manage the Risk Fund on your behalf, and charges a Wakalah fee (ujrah) for this service. For the direct channel, the Wakalah fee covers management expenses of 20%, with 0% commission.
As a takaful participant, you are also entitled to a Surplus Performance Incentive (SPI) of 50% of the gross distributable surplus from the Risk Fund at year-end, where applicable. Takaful IKHLAS may, at its discretion, charge less than 50%.
What does this certificate cover?
Under comprehensive cover, your certificate covers:
Own vehicle
- Accidental collision or overturning (including those caused by mechanical breakdown or wear and tear)
- Impact damage from falling objects (not caused by natural convulsions)
- Fire, explosion, or lightning
- Breakage of windscreen, windows, or sunroof, including lamination and tinting film
- Burglary, housebreaking, or theft
- Malicious acts
- Damage while in transit by road, rail, inland waterway, or ferry between Penang Island and the mainland
Third-party liability
- Unlimited liability for death or bodily injury to third parties
- Up to RM3 million for third-party property damage (extendable to RM20 million via endorsement)
- Legal costs up to RM2,000 to defend reckless or dangerous driving charges
Included as standard (non-tariff)
- Waiver of Compulsory Excess for Unnamed Driver
- Complimentary Personal Accident cover for the takaful participant
- Transportation Fee Reimbursement
If the third party is clearly at fault, you can submit a Knock-for-Knock (KfK) own damage claim to Takaful IKHLAS — your NCD entitlement will not be affected, and you can recover the excess you paid from the third party's takaful operator or insurer.
What is not covered
By default, your certificate does not cover:
- Your own death or bodily injury from a motor accident
- Your liability against claims from passengers in your vehicle
- Loss, damage, or liability from acts of nature — flood, typhoon, storm, landslide, earthquake, and similar events
- Consequential loss, depreciation, wear and tear, and mechanical or electronic breakdowns
- Damage to tyres only (unless other parts of your car are damaged at the same time)
- Loss of electronic data caused by a computer virus
- Claims arising from drunk driving, unlicensed drivers, or use for unlawful purposes
The first three exclusions can be covered separately via endorsements at an additional contribution.
How your contribution is calculated
Your total contribution depends on several factors:
- Market value of your vehicle (sum covered, based on ISM Automotive Business Intelligence database)
- Engine capacity and vehicle age
- No Claim Discount (NCD) entitlement
- Age, gender, occupation, and education of the driver
- Place of residence and claims history
- Any optional add-ons selected
As an illustration, a comprehensive cover with a base contribution of RM1,000, 0% NCD, and RM200 in optional add-ons comes to approximately RM1,176.40 via the direct online channel — after the 20% Wakalah fee, prevailing service tax, RM10 stamp duty, and the 10% direct channel rebate are applied.
The cover only becomes effective once the full contribution is received. The certificate will not be activated if payment has not been made on or before the commencement date.
What to do if you're in an accident
Can I cancel my certificate?
Yes. Give written notice to Takaful IKHLAS and you will receive a pro-rata refund of the contribution for the remaining unexpired period. A cancellation fee of RM10 applies. No refund is available if a claim has been made under the certificate, or if you have only paid the minimum contribution.
If you cancel only an optional endorsement while keeping the base certificate, no contribution refund is given for that add-on.
If you sell your car, your certificate lapses automatically as your takaful interest in the vehicle ceases. You will need Takaful IKHLAS's prior consent to transfer the certificate to the new owner.
