What is TIME Fibre Home Broadband 300Mbps all about?
When the TIME Fibre Home Broadband series was revamped and announced in March of 2016, it set the social media scene in Malaysia abuzz with excitement, some disappointment and the usual government-bashing. Upon the revamp, it is officially and undoubtedly the fastest home internet broadband plan in Malaysia.
The mid-range 300Mbps package is seen by many customers as the sweet spot between affordability and performance.
What will I get once I subscribe to this service?
For a pre- GST price of RM189 per month, your TIME Fibre Home Broadband 300Mbps subscription comes included with a classy-looking D-Link Wi-Fi Router and a DECT cordless phone. The package also comes bundled with TIME’s Voice Home Basic plan, but there is no commitment fee needed and is on a pay-as-you-use basis. You’ll only have to pay 9 sen per minute for domestic calls to any network.
Are there any installation fees to pay?
The installation fee is waived as long as the location where you’d like the Wi-Fi router to be placed is within 20 metres from your main door.
Can I upgrade my voice call plan?
You could also opt to pay RM10 per month for 2,000 minutes’ worth of voice calls per year. If you do the math, 9 sen per minute comes to about RM180 for 2,000 minutes. If you opt for the RM10 per month, that’s only RM120 a year, which translates to savings of RM60.Though it’s likely you’ll never use this service if you have the latest Postpaid Plans from telcos, it’s still good value for money and good enough for mom and dad at home!
What if I move home within my contract period? Any relocation fees?
The main concern when relocating your TIME Fibre Broadband service is whether the new place you’re moving to is served by TIME dotcom. The company mainly serves high-rise, high-density residential areas.
If the TIME Fibre Broadband service is available in your new residential unit, the relocation service can be done with a small fee to reinstall the broadband in your new home.
Can I terminate my service within the contact period?
You’ll have to send a signed, written notice to TIME within 30 working days from the commencement of your broadband service. The included Wi-Fi router, DECT phone and any other equipment will have to be returned to TIME in good condition. Bear in mind that you’ll also have to pay a penalty fee of RM500.
How fast is 300Mbps actually?
As 1 Megabyte is equivalent to 8 Megabits, which means you’ll theoretically get around 37.5 MB/s (Megabytes per second), but bear in mind that this is assuming that all other conditions are perfect, and that your computer or phone is powerful enough to support that kind of transfer speeds.
What sort of benefit would I receive from such a fast Internet connection?
TIME dotcom claims that you’ll be able to download an entire High Definition (HD) movie in 53 seconds. Based on the best possible transfer rates, this means the movie’s file size is about 1.9 GB. It’s likely that TIME is referring to a 720p file, since a more realistic file size for a full-HD movie would be around 3 GB.
If the file size is 3GB, then the fastest you could download this file is probably around 80 seconds.
How good is the included broadband router?
TIME claims that this plan suits households with up to 8 connected devices, but the D-Link DIR-850L router that TIME provides is good enough to support more than just 8 devices. However, the router is perhaps more suitable for smaller homes since the performance drops off significantly if your device is further away from the router.
If you live in a 700 – 1,000 sq ft. home, it should be fine.
