What is StashAway Simple?
It is a cash management portfolio, not a savings account or a fixed deposit (FD). StashAway Simple is managed by StashAway Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and is licensed by the Securities Commission Malaysia (Licence eCMSL/A0352/2018).
The current projected rate is 3.40% per year, calculated after all fees are deducted. What's great is that you don't need to maintain a minimum or maximum account balance to receive that rate.
There is no lock-in period, so you can withdraw or transfer your money at any time without penalty.
Where does my money go?
Your money is invested in two underlying funds: 80% in the Principal Islamic Money Market Fund and 20% in the AmIncome Fund, rather than being kept in a bank account.
These funds consist of fixed deposits and short-term bonds. StashAway classifies Simple as an ultra-low-risk investment due to its structure, but it is not risk-free.
StashAway gives a specific number to this risk. Its Risk Index for Simple is 0.1%, which shows a 99% probability that you will not lose more than 0.1% of your investment in a year. This represents a very low level of investment risk. However, it is not zero, which sets it apart from a bank deposit protected by PIDM.
Since the projected rate relies on the performance of the two funds, it fluctuates with Malaysia's economic conditions and is not fixed like a bank's FD rate. StashAway states that it rebalances the portfolio as required to keep the projected rate as high as possible within that risk level, but the rate is never guaranteed.
Below is the performance of StashAway Simple over the last four quarters, annualised and with returns reinvested:
| Quarter | Annualised Return (net of fees) |
| Q3 2024 | 3.56% |
| Q4 2024 | 3.53% |
| Q1 2025 | 3.67% |
| Q2 2025 | 3.76% |
As of 30 June 2025. Past performance does not guarantee future returns.
Any applicable fees?
StashAway applies a 0.15% p.a. management fee to your Simple balance. This is separate from fees on any other StashAway portfolios you hold, so it doesn't affect their blended rate.
On top of that, the underlying funds carry their own costs, though StashAway hands most of it back to you as a rebate.
| Cost | Rate |
| Fund management fee | 0.47% p.a. |
| Trustee fee (for safekeeping your assets) | 0.04% p.a. |
| Blended expense ratio | 0.51% p.a. |
| Rebate StashAway passes back to you | −0.32% p.a. |
| Net cost to you | 0.20% p.a. |
That 0.20% net cost is already included in the 3.40% projected rate, so you won't see it charged separately.
Additionally, a minimum account-level fee of RM5 a month applies across your total StashAway account (all portfolios combined, if any). New customers are exempt for the first six months, including investors who deposit more than they withdraw in a given month.
How long does it take to deposit or withdraw from StashAway Simple?
Deposits from your personal bank account take 2 to 3 business days to reflect in your Simple portfolio. Withdrawals back to your bank account take a bit longer, at 3 to 4 business days.
What makes StashAway Simple different from a fixed deposit?
The primary difference is flexibility. Fixed deposits require you to commit your funds for a specific period, and if you withdraw early, banks typically apply a penalty by reducing your interest to the standard savings rate.
StashAway Simple, on the other hand, does not have a lock-in period. You may withdraw your funds at any time while keeping all the returns you have earned up to that point.
Another difference is the type of protection provided. Fixed deposits placed with PIDM member banks are protected up to RM250,000 per depositor per bank. StashAway Simple is an investment product, not a deposit, so it isn't covered by PIDM. Instead, your money is held by Pacific Trustees Berhad, a licensed trustee, which means it stays legally separate from StashAway's own assets.
Does StashAway Simple work similarly to a high-interest savings account?
No. Most savings and cash management products in the market apply their advertised rate only to a portion of your balance, or only after you have met conditions such as salary crediting, minimum card spend, or holding other products with the bank.
StashAway Simple pays the same projected rate on your entire balance, without any of that fine print.
Am I eligible to apply?
Anyone aged at least 18 years is eligible to open a StashAway Simple account, in line with Securities Commission Malaysia rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an existing StashAway investment account to use Simple?
No. StashAway Simple works as a standalone product. You don't need to hold any other StashAway portfolio to use it.
Why not just invest in these funds myself instead of going through StashAway?
You could, but it would probably cost you more. If you buy these funds on your own, it usually means paying retail prices with higher annual fees. StashAway buys in at a bulk, lower-cost rate that individual investors can't access on their own, then hands back 100% of the rebates it earns from the fund managers, whereas most platforms keep that money for themselves.
