Bursa Malaysia has launched its Bursa In-Depth Equity Analysis Research Competition (Bursa IDEA), which offers cash prizes of up to RM5,000 to be won. Set to run until 3 November 2023, it seeks to promote a deeper understanding of the financial landscape and to encourage careful research among the public.

In a statement, Bursa said that the competition is open to all Malaysians who are aged 18 and above, and they will need to submit a 1,000 to 3,000-word research report based on the theme of “Market Trends and Sector Analysis”. These may include topics related to the equity market and economic factors that affect market trends, as well as research on sectoral trends and analysis.

Interested individuals are required to register to join the competition, and no registration fee will be charged. You can complete your registration and upload your research paper online via this form. You’re also encouraged to use the various resources and tools that are available on Bursa Marketplace to help you in your report, including Bursa Digital Research (BDR), Bursa RISE reports, and Refinitiv data. Additionally, a webinar will be organised to guide participants on how to produce a good research report.

Bursa’s selected judges, meanwhile, will evaluate participants’ submitted reports via a range of criteria, including the research methodology, significance of findings, and quality of investment theses.

“This competition provides a platform for up-and-coming researchers, analysts, and market enthusiasts to showcase their prowess in equity analysis and report writing. This aligns with Bursa Malaysia’s efforts in nurturing talent and fostering growth in the capital market,” said the chief executive of Bursa Malaysia, Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift.

Datuk Muhamad Umar further said that initiatives like these will also have the added benefit of sparking new investment ideas as investors draw inspiration from current economic and industry developments. This, in turn, will foster a more vibrant market.
