HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad and HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad will update the authorisation process for online transactions involving HSBC Credit Card/-i and Debit Card/-i holders from 21 June 2025. Under the revised process, customers will be required to approve online card transactions through the HSBC Malaysia Mobile Banking app, replacing the current system that uses SMS one-time passwords (OTPs).

According to the banks, the change is intended to strengthen security measures and streamline the authentication process. Customers who have enabled push notifications on the mobile app will receive real-time prompts to approve or reject transactions directly through the app. Those who have not enabled push notifications, or who have yet to install the HSBC Malaysia Mobile Banking app, are advised to do so to avoid disruptions when making online purchases. The revision only applies to online transactions that require 3D Secure authentication and does not affect face-to-face card payments or ATM withdrawals.

Customers who do not use the mobile app may face difficulties approving online transactions once the new process takes effect. The banks have encouraged users to familiarise themselves with the Mobile Secure Approval feature, which allows transactions to be authorised securely within the app. Guides and frequently asked questions have been published on HSBC Malaysia’s website to assist customers in setting up the necessary features.

The update comes as part of broader efforts across the banking sector to reduce reliance on SMS OTPs, which are considered more vulnerable to security threats compared to app-based authentication. By shifting to Mobile Secure Approval, HSBC joins other financial institutions in adopting measures aimed at enhancing the protection of online transactions.

Customers seeking further information are advised to refer to the digital banking guide and FAQs available on HSBC Malaysia’s website, or to contact the bank’s customer service centres at 1300 80 2626 (local) or +603 8321 5200 (overseas).
