In his Budget 2025 presentation speech, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has proposed that the long-anticipated subsidy rationalisation exercise for RON95 petrol to take place sometime in mid-2025.

According to Dato’ Seri Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, the government is committed to retain the subsidy for the majority of the rakyat, similar to the electricity subsidy rationalisation that did not affect 85% of the population.

However, the actual mechanism was not mentioned – though he stressed that the petrol subsidy rationalisation will ensure that the usage needs of the 85% of the rakyat are retained and not burden the vast majority of the population that needs it.
