Bursa Malaysia had recently organised its inaugural Virtual Marketplace Fair in a bid to better educate its retail investors, and has seen a positive response with participation from as many as 8,000 attendees. The one-day event took place on 10 July 2021.

According to the director of securities market for Bursa Malaysia, Azhar Mohd Zabidi, the fair was aimed at providing retail investors with the necessary investment knowledge and skillset. Additionally, it also sought to develop the mindset that participation in the capital market can also be a way to build wealth.

“Retail investors have always been a priority for the exchange as they have a positive impact on market liquidity and depth. Hence, raising financial literacy among investors is very important to us. We want to help them make informed decisions, while at the same time ensure a sustainable market in the long run,” said Azhar in a statement.

Azhar also emphasised that it is crucial for investors to understand stock trading from both fundamental and technical standpoints if they wish to trade with confidence. “Thorough research and analysis must be conducted to understand and invest in instruments that suit individual risk appetite and investment goals. Without the right knowledge, there is a high risk of falling prey to investment scam and other dubious schemes,” he further commented.

Bursa Malaysia had seen a significant growth in retail participation since the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic back in 2020. The bourse noted that retail investors accounted for 34% of total trades in 2020 – a record high to have been logged in the last decade. Meanwhile, retail participation in 2021 has also been showing positive momentum thus far.
