The government has fixed the new ceiling price of standard chicken at RM9.40 per kg, up 50 sen from the existing ceiling price of RM8.90 per kg. The new price is set to take effect starting from 1 July 2022 (Friday).

Additionally, the Agriculture and Food Industries Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee announced that chicken eggs in Peninsular Malaysia will also have new ceiling prices, set as per the following:

  • Grade A eggs: RM0.45 per egg (currently RM0.43 per egg)
  • Grade B eggs: RM0.43 per egg (currently RM0.41 per egg)
  • Grade C eggs: RM0.41 per egg (currently RM0.39 per egg)

Datuk Seri Dr Ronald further said that the government will allocate approximately RM369.5 million for subsidies under these new ceiling prices. He also stressed that Malaysia is not the only country to face an increase in the prices of goods; rather, it is a global problem due to supply chain disruptions, climate change, and geopolitical conflicts.

“Nevertheless, the government is trying its best to set a price control mechanism to ensure that the Malaysian Family isn’t burdened by the challenges of the cost of living,” Datuk Seri Dr Ronald stated.

The subject of ceiling prices for chicken and chicken egg has been making headlines recently as they were set to expire by 30 June 2022. The government then announced last week that it will remove the ceiling prices for chicken and chicken eggs – along with subsidies for bottled cooking oil – starting from 1 July 2022. Instead, chicken prices will floated depending on market conditions. Not two days later, however, the decision on floating prices for chicken was reversed, with prime minister Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri stating that a new ceiling price will be announced at a later date.
