Malaysians who have been barred from international travel due to income tax arrears can apply to cancel their travel ban via the MyTax portal starting from 4 April 2024, said the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN).

In a statement, LHDN explained that affected individuals who wish to make the application can do so by accessing the new e-Travel Ban service on the MyTax portal. They must, however, meet certain criteria, including:

  • Must be a Malaysian citizen
  • Travel ban is imposed under the Income Tax Act 1967
  • Settle outstanding tax liabilities in full
  • Excludes travel bans imposed on company directors

Eligible individuals are encouraged to repay their tax arrears in full via the ByrHASiL service or selected internet banking services using the Travel Ban Bill Number. Once done, your application will be processed within five days, after which you’ll be informed of your application status via email or a notice in your MyTax account.

Aside from this online channel, LHDN said that impacted Malaysians can also continue to apply for travel ban cancellations through existing procedures and channels. These include visiting the nearest HASiL offices, or reaching out to LHDN via the HASiL Care Centre hotline at 03-8911 1000.

Separately, the agency also indicated on its FAQ page for travel bans that taxpayers who are unable to repay their tax arrears in full can also opt to make a payment of 50% to obtain a temporary release letter (although this may only be applicable for the offline methods).
