Malaysian Workers To Get 24/7 Social Security Coverage

A new non-employment injury scheme is set to be introduced, ensuring that workers in Malaysia receive around-the-clock protection. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the initiative at the World Social Security Forum, highlighting the need for social security to adapt to modern work realities. The scheme recognises that professional responsibilities and the risks associated with them extend beyond a traditional office setting.

Extending Social Security Beyond The Workplace

The Prime Minister emphasised that work pressures do not simply cease at the end of the workday. With the rise of flexible and remote working arrangements, the new reform aims to provide coverage that aligns with how people live and work today. This initiative will extend protection around the clock, acknowledging that accidents, injuries, and illnesses do not follow a fixed schedule. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim had previously mentioned in February that the scheme would provide 24-hour social security protection for all workers, including those in the gig economy and freelance sectors.

Preparing For An Ageing Society

As Malaysia prepares for an ageing population, where projections suggest one in seven Malaysians will be over 60 by 2030, Anwar also addressed the importance of supporting senior citizens. The government’s objective is to provide necessary care while also creating opportunities for continued contribution, ensuring that ageing is viewed with dignity, possibility, and respect. It is vital for the nation to be ready for the profound societal changes that this demographic shift will bring about, including how to best support its experienced population.

Leveraging Digital Systems For Inclusive Protection

To ensure no one is left behind, especially individuals in remote areas, Malaysia is integrating digital systems into its social security framework. This move aims to make social protection more accessible and efficient for everyone, regardless of their location or circumstances. Anwar explained that a country’s true prosperity is not solely measured by economic growth or infrastructure, but by the overall quality of life of its citizens. The goal is to ensure that social protection keeps pace with a rapidly changing world for the benefit of current and future generations.
