RM100 SARA Aid Part Of Wider Cash Assistance To Ease Living Costs, Says Anwar

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has clarified that the one-off RM100 Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) appreciation aid is not intended as a stand-alone measure. Instead, it forms part of a broader package of cash assistance designed to help Malaysians manage rising living costs.

The initiative, disbursed from 31 August 2025, complements existing programmes such as MySara and the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR). Together, these schemes aim to reduce the financial burden faced by millions of households.

“When we talk about SARA, some ask ‘what can RM100 do?’ They forget this is an addition to STR and MySara. In total, nine million people are benefiting from these forms of support,” said Anwar.

RM15 billion Allocated for Direct Assistance

The government has committed RM15 billion this year for STR and SARA, marking the highest allocation in Malaysia’s history of cash assistance. Of this, RM2 billion was added for the one-off SARA appreciation aid, benefiting 22 million people nationwide.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the initiative recorded RM100 million in transactions within its first week, with a 99.9% success rate across 1.7 million recipients.

Recognition from Foreign Leaders

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, revealed that foreign leaders, especially within ASEAN, have praised the SARA initiative for its people-centred approach. He noted, however, that many admitted it would be difficult to replicate in their own countries.

He highlighted that Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh recently introduced an aid scheme worth about RM50 per person and expressed interest in Malaysia’s larger-scale model.

“When I explained that Malaysia spends RM15 billion to support nine million people, many said they could not afford to do the same,” Anwar said.

Balancing Welfare and Economic Growth

Alongside direct aid, Anwar stressed the importance of ensuring fair distribution of national prosperity. He pointed out that Malaysia’s economic growth is supported by rising investments, but this must be matched with efforts to safeguard people’s well-being, including those in rural and remote areas.

“In the Madani government, we continue to focus on rural development as well as direct support for the people,” he said.

Call for Integrity in Governance

Anwar also reminded leaders at both state and federal levels to uphold integrity in carrying out their duties.

“My hope is that my colleagues understand this. Do not be corrupt, do not misuse the people’s wealth. We must safeguard well-being, keep the country peaceful, and ensure the economy remains strong,” he said.
