Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has reiterated the benefits of the Bantuan Lesen Memandu Keluarga Malaysia (BLKM) programme, which aims to help individuals from the low-income group to get their driving licences at a lower fee.
Those who are entitled will only need to pay RM250 to get their driving licences, instead of the usual amount of RM750 for regular Malaysians. This includes a brief course. Note, though, that the aid is only applicable for the B2 licence class, which allows you to ride a motorcycle up to 250cc.
To qualify for the BLKM programme, you must be a Malaysian citizen aged 16 years old and above, with no health issues or disabilities, and are not blacklisted by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) or the police. Additionally, you should not possess any driving licences at the time of application.
“This programme under the Road Transport Department (JPJ) was created to reduce the burden of Keluarga Malaysia, especially the B40 category, when it comes to owning a valid driving licence,” said the minister after officially introducing the programme in Ayer Hitam, Johor.
Datuk Seri Wee also said that he hopes the programme will help the B40 group to obtain driving licences so that they can perform daily activities and earn income more easily. In particular, he said that this will be useful for youths who are working in the gig economy to generate income.
To note, the BLKM programme had actually been launched earlier this year, in March, by prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. On 6 August, Datuk Seri Wee – who is also the Member of Parliament for Ayer Hitam – officially introduced the programme in his constituency.
