CIMB has launched a new salary account that includes complimentary Takaful protection of up to RM200,000 as part of its CIMB@Work programme. The CIMB Salary Account covers 36 critical illnesses alongside death and total and permanent disability (TPD), with the protection underwritten by Sun Life Malaysia Takaful Berhad.
No contribution payments are required, and no health screening or health declaration is needed to qualify, aside from exclusions related to pre-existing conditions.
The amount of protection you receive depends on how much you keep in the account. Coverage is calculated based on your monthly average balance (MAB) two months before any claim is made, and the amounts are tiered.
If you maintain a balance of at least RM2,500, you qualify for RM5,000 in coverage. That scales progressively. Keep an average balance of RM100,000 or above and you receive the maximum RM200,000 in coverage.
| Monthly Average Balance | Coverage Amount |
| RM2,500 to below RM5,000 | RM5,000 |
| RM5,000 to below RM10,000 | RM10,000 |
| RM10,000 to below RM20,000 | RM20,000 |
| RM20,000 to below RM30,000 | RM40,000 |
| RM30,000 to below RM50,000 | RM60,000 |
| RM50,000 to below RM100,000 | RM100,000 |
| RM100,000 and above | RM200,000 |
To qualify for the Takaful coverage, you must be aged between 18 and 69, have your salary credited into the account, and maintain a monthly average balance of at least RM2,500.
Coverage does not start immediately. Enrolment takes effect two months after you meet all eligibility criteria, followed by a further three-month waiting period before you can make any claims. In practice, this means it could be up to five months from account opening before the protection is active.
If you open the account between May and July 2026, you will also receive additional complimentary critical illness coverage for one year, effectively doubling your standard coverage amount for that period, subject to terms and conditions. If you want even higher protection, from July to December 2026 you can purchase up to RM300,000 in additional critical illness and death coverage directly from Sun Life Malaysia Takaful Berhad online, with no medical underwriting required, though exclusions for pre-existing conditions still apply.
The Takaful coverage is one shared amount across critical illness, death, and TPD. Any payout you receive reduces the remaining sum available for future claims. A full payout under any category will terminate the Takaful certificate, and you would not be eligible for re-enrolment after that.
If your average balance sits between RM2,500 and RM5,000, your coverage works out to RM5,000. That provides some financial cushion in the event of a serious illness or permanent disability, though it is unlikely to cover extended medical treatment or replace a significant period of lost income on its own. If you already keep a higher balance and would otherwise need to purchase separate term coverage, the bundled protection removes some of the friction of applying for a standalone plan, particularly since no health declaration is required.
As a CIMB@Work customer, you also continue to benefit from easier access to selected credit cards and lower financing rates for personal, home, and ASB-backed loans.
Only 40% to 50% of Malaysians currently have any form of life protection, and for many salaried workers the gap is not intentional. Standalone Takaful or insurance plans require research, paperwork, and an active decision to apply, and many people put it off indefinitely.
If your salary is already going into a CIMB account and your balance stays above RM2,500, the coverage here is automatic. No separate application, no health declaration, no additional premium.
The CIMB Salary Account can be opened at any CIMB branch and is protected by Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PIDM) up to RM250,000 per depositor.
