Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the MediAsas plan will be introduced in January 2027, and said it will be affordable. Under the plan, hospital charges will be based on the patient’s diagnosis and treatment. This is meant to help control costs and make them easier to predict. The premium amount has not been announced yet.
EPF members below the age of 55 will be allowed to pay their MediAsas premiums using savings from their Akaun Sejahtera (Account 2).
For small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with fewer than 75 employees, the government will pay RM200 of each employee’s first-year premium, for up to 50 employees per company. This is expected to benefit up to 200,000 workers.
In addition, the government will introduce measures to improve transparency in private healthcare costs. Beginning 2027, private hospitals must use the same standard charge categories on their bills. This lets patients understand each charge and helps reduce irregular pricing.
Electronic medical records will also be expanded so that each person has one medical record.
The government will also develop the e-CKAPS portal, which will let private healthcare facilities apply for their licences fully online from 2027. The government aims to cut processing time by up to 65%.
