From 2 November, you can renew your passport online for five or 10 years through MyOnline Passport, the Immigration Department said on Facebook. Before this, the 10-year passport could only be applied for at an immigration office.
Your fee depends on your age and the validity you choose. Applicants under 18, Hajj pilgrims, and undergraduate students under 21 studying abroad can renew for five years only.
Fees below follow the rates set on 3 June, as listed on the Immigration Department’s website.
| Applicant | Five-year passport | 10-year passport |
| Aged 18 to 59 | RM200 | RM350 |
| Aged 60 and above | RM100 | RM175 |
| Aged 12 to 17 | RM200 | Not available |
| Under 12 | RM100 | Not available |
| Hajj pilgrims and students abroad | RM100 | Not available |
| OKU card holders, 18 and above | Not available | Free |
| OKU card holders under 18 | Free | Not available |
A 10-year passport costs RM350, while two five-year passports cost RM400 over the same 10 years. That saves you RM50, or RM25 if you are a senior citizen paying RM175 instead of RM200.
If you travel often, a 10-year passport also means one fewer renewal and one fewer trip to collect the new passport.
MyOnline Passport handles renewals only. So if you’re applying for the first time, or replacing a lost or damaged passport, visit an immigration office instead. Have your MyKad, current passport number, email address, and a recent photo ready.
In August, the Immigration Department set a maximum of 10 years for passport validity. Some passports were valid for longer because renewing within six months of expiry added the months left on your old passport. Some airlines’ check-in systems had problems with these passports. Renewing early no longer adds those months.
Before you book your next flight, check the issue and expiry dates on your passport’s photo page. If they are more than 10 years apart, the department said it would replace it for free. Apply at a nearby immigration office, or at the nearest Malaysian embassy, high commission, or consulate if you are overseas.
