The Federation of Investment Managers Malaysia (FIMM) launched its inaugural Unit Trust Experience (UTX) roadshow on 23-24 November 2024 at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara. The event aimed to increase awareness of Unit Trust and Private Retirement Schemes (PRS) investments, while also highlighting career opportunities in the investment sector.

In his welcome address, FIMM Chairman Mohd Ridzal Mohd Sheriff emphasised the importance of proactive financial planning. “The rising cost of living makes it essential for individuals to adopt sound financial strategies to secure their well-being,” he said. He also highlighted the critical role of investing in achieving long-term goals such as homeownership, education, and retirement. The Chairman further noted that as life expectancy increases, retirement planning becomes ever more essential for financial security.

As of August 2024, the Net Asset Value (NAV) for Unit Trust and PRS in Malaysia reached a record high of RM 548.1 billion. The Unit Trust sector now includes over 760 funds and more than 26 million accounts, 90% of which are held by individual investors. The PRS sector has also shown significant growth, with 78 funds and 579,000 accounts as of December 2023.

In addition to promoting regulated investment products, the event spotlighted the rewarding career opportunities in the Unit Trust and PRS sectors. “A career in this industry offers both professional growth and the chance to help others achieve their financial aspirations,” Ridzal noted. With over 62,000 Unit Trust Consultants and more than 29,000 PRS Consultants currently active in Malaysia, many have found new opportunities, especially during the pandemic, contributing to the sector’s expansion.

The FIMM UTX roadshow attracted around 2,500 visitors over two days, with representatives from Unit Trust Management Companies, Distributors, and PRS providers engaging with attendees. Supported by the Securities Commission Malaysia and key industry players such as Private Pension Administrator Malaysia, Public Mutual Berhad, Kenanga Investors Berhad, and FSMOne Malaysia, the event featured speaking sessions aimed at sharing valuable insights with visitors. These sessions provided opportunities for attendees to have their questions answered in person by company representatives, all with a focus on promoting responsible and confident investing.

FIMM CEO Kaleon Leong reflected on the roadshow’s success, saying, “The feedback has been encouraging, and we look forward to using this as a springboard for future initiatives aimed at promoting investment and career opportunities within the sector.”
