Frequent Singapore Commuters Can Still Qualify For STR Assistance
Author Avatar

Malaysians who travel regularly to Singapore can remain eligible for Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah, provided they meet the programme’s criteria, including residency in Malaysia.

Travel Frequency Used To Assess Residency

The Inland Revenue Board, which administers STR, uses travel frequency data to distinguish between short trips and situations where an individual is considered to be living or working abroad.

According to Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong, travelling between Malaysia and Singapore one to seven times a month is generally treated as normal. This covers activities such as medical visits, family commitments, emergencies, or short-term work assignments.

Individuals who enter and leave Singapore eight times or more in a month are viewed as spending a significant amount of time abroad. This threshold is based on the assumption of weekly commuting and forms part of the eligibility assessment.

Reason Code Used For Overseas Residency Cases

Applications assessed as involving residency, work, or study overseas may be marked as not approved under Reason Code 31. This classification does not permanently disqualify an individual from receiving STR.

Integrated Data Checks Support Fair Distribution

STR is a targeted cash assistance programme, and eligibility checks draw on integrated data from multiple agencies, including immigration records. This process is intended to ensure assistance reaches Malaysians who meet the programme’s requirements.

Appeals Open For Affected Applicants

Malaysians affected by the travel frequency assessment can submit an appeal at any time during the year. Individual circumstances, such as frequent cross-border travel for Malaysia-based jobs, can be reviewed as part of the appeal process.
