Government May Introduce Dedicated Fund For Animal Shelters Under New Proposal
Author Avatar

Pet owners could get a little help with the cost of looking after their cats and dogs. The government is now considering tax incentives that could help ease some of that financial burden, while also exploring a dedicated fund to support animal welfare groups and shelters.

Political secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office Datuk Azman Abidin said both proposals are still under consideration. Recommendations and possible legal improvements will first be compiled into a proposal paper before the government decides on the next steps.

Helping Shelters That Rely On Donations

Azman said the lack of dedicated government funding has left many animal welfare groups and shelters covering the cost of rescuing, feeding and caring for stray animals using their own funds. Additional funding could help ease those day-to-day costs, work that is often supported through donations and volunteers.

The proposal also includes tax incentives for pet owners, although no details have been announced on what those incentives could include, who would qualify or when they might be introduced.

Continuing Animal Welfare Efforts

For many animal welfare groups, additional funding could help ease the day-to-day costs of rescuing, feeding and caring for stray animals, work that is often supported through donations and volunteers.

NGO representative Jurieena Abdul Rani welcomed the proposal, saying financial support would help animal welfare groups continue assisting local authorities in managing the stray cat and dog population, work that many organisations already carry out despite limited funding.

The dedicated fund and tax incentives remain proposals for now, with no timeline on when a decision will be made.
