The government has made a turnabout and agreed to continue subsidising chicken and eggs after 30 June 2023. This came following an earlier announcement that the prices of eggs and chicken in the market will be floated starting from 1 July.
This announcement was confirmed by both the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) as well as the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).
“After considering all aspects including ensuring the sustainability of the chicken and egg industry, and the welfare of the public remains protected, the prime minister has agreed with KPKM and KPDN’s proposal to continue subsidies and price controls for chicken and egg from 1 July 2023,” both ministries said in a joint statement.

Prior to that, KPKM minister Mohamad Sabu had said that the subsidies for eggs and chicken will end on 30 June, and that prices will be floated from 1 July with some control from KPDN. He also shared that the government will roll out several measures to ensure that the supply of eggs and chicken in Malaysia is not disrupted subsequently. These included lifting the ban on exporting day-old chicks, whole chicken, and chicken parts from 1 July, as well as allowing the import of eggs and chicken from selected source countries.
Meanwhile, the retail price ceiling for a standard chicken in Peninsular Malaysia currently stands at RM9.40 per kg. For eggs, the ceiling prices are set at RM0.45 (Grade A), RM0.43 (Grade B), or RM0.41 (Grade C).
