PMO Clarifies Viral Message On RM600 Aid For Senior Citizens
Author Avatar

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has clarified that a viral WhatsApp message claiming all senior citizens are entitled to RM600 in monthly government aid is misleading.

An aide to the prime minister explained that the monthly assistance is not a blanket payment for all seniors. Instead, it is targeted at specific groups based on household income and living circumstances.

Eligibility Based On Income Threshold

The welfare aid is reserved for senior citizens living in households with a combined monthly income below the hardcore poverty line of RM1,198. This threshold is set by the Social Welfare Department.

Senior citizens who live on their own without financial support are also eligible for the aid, even if they are not part of a larger household.

Special Consideration Possible

For seniors whose household incomes exceed the hardcore poverty threshold, applications can still be submitted for review. The Social Welfare Department allows for appeals and special consideration on a case-by-case basis.

Public Urged To Verify Information

Malaysians are urged to be cautious about viral messages that circulate on WhatsApp and social media. Messages that leave out eligibility criteria or income thresholds may create unnecessary confusion.

For accurate details on welfare assistance, the public is advised to refer directly to official channels, including the Social Welfare Department’s website or government announcements.

For those looking beyond government aid, senior citizens can also consider dedicated savings products that offer higher interest rates, flexible withdrawals, and additional perks. You can explore some of the Best Senior Savings Accounts in Malaysia to find options that suit retirement and daily financial needs.
