As part of the Bantuan Prihatin Nasional economic stimulus package, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced some good news for Malaysians at home under the Movement Control Order (MCO): free internet access daily for all.

In his speech, Tan Sri Muhyiddin stated that starting 1 April 2020 until the end of the MCO, all Malaysians will be given free internet access. No further details was mentioned, but from a text blurb on the live stream, it appears that all Malaysians will receive 1GB data allocation per day, every day until the MCO ends.

According to a press release by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the 1GB data allocation will be provided to all prepaid and postpaid users from the following telcos:

  • Celcom
  • Digi
  • Maxis
  • U Mobile

In addition, the free data allocation is only valid from 8am to 6pm daily.

The free internet access allocation is worth RM600 million, and is made possible with the assistance of local telecommunications companies. In fact, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin also hinted that this is one of several special packages from the telecommunications and multimedia industry that will be offered to the rakyat.

In line with the increased usage of networks around the country during the MCO, the Government has also allocated an additional RM400 million to be invested for the improvement of networks and increasing coverage to ensure a high-quality telecommunications network during this period.
