U Mobile Plans In-Building 5G Coverage For 600 Sites By 2029

Malaysia’s second 5G network operator is moving forward with plans to deliver full in-building 5G coverage to over 600 commercial buildings by 2029. U Mobile’s Ultra 5G rollout begins with more than 170 locations in the first year, with a focus on commercial properties such as hospitals, airports, shopping malls, and public transport hubs.

The infrastructure push follows U Mobile’s appointment in November 2024 as the second 5G operator in the country, and forms part of a multi-billion-ringgit investment to support nationwide 5G access.

Berjaya Times Square First to Go Live Under Ultra 5G

Ultra 5G is already active in over 70 buildings, with Berjaya Times Square as the first commercial site to go live. Installations are in progress at key locations, including Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Kota Kinabalu International Airport, and Langkawi International Airport.

The network is built on standalone 5G architecture using the 3.5GHz and 700MHz spectrum bands. U Mobile customers can access Ultra 5G without needing to subscribe to additional or premium plans.

Coverage Targets 90% of Population Within Two Years

The network operator aims to achieve 80% population coverage within the first year, and 90% within two years. This includes urban and rural areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. No current population coverage data has been shared, but the company noted that more than 30% of its subscribers are already using 5G services.

Enterprise Applications Expected to Benefit From Ultra 5G

Ultra 5G is expected to support a wide range of enterprise use cases, including robotics, extended reality, automation, and other Industry 4.0 applications. These use cases require high-speed, low-latency connectivity, especially in data-intensive environments such as factories, hospitals, and logistics centres.

Full in-building 5G aims to provide seamless, reliable performance even in areas like car parks, lifts, and enclosed spaces, subject to installation approvals from building management.

Supporting Malaysia’s Broader Digital Transformation Goals

The 5G infrastructure expansion contributes to Malaysia’s wider digital agenda, aligning with the government’s push to improve connectivity nationwide. As of August 2025, internet coverage in populated areas has reached 98.82%, while 5G coverage stands at 82.4%, according to official figures from the Ministry of Communications.
