Internet coverage in Malaysia’s populated areas has reached 98.82%, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

5G Services Now at 82.4% Coverage

Fahmi said Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) has completed 7,489 transmitter sites, providing 82.4% 5G coverage in populated areas nationwide.

The expansion of 5G access to rural areas will be implemented in stages based on demand and infrastructure readiness.

Second 5G Network Launched

The minister said the country’s second 5G network, operated by U Mobile, was launched on 14 July following discussions with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

As of 31 July, 5G mobile broadband penetration stood at 82.7 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, with more than 28 million internet accounts connected to 5G services.

Jendela Phase 1 Nearing Completion

Fahmi said the Jendela Phase 1 network expansion programme is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Plans for Phase 2 are currently under review and will be announced by MCMC in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The review covers suitable service delivery methods and the capacity of the Universal Service Provision Fund to finance both capital and operational expenditures. Project locations are also being identified, with potential solutions including the construction of new towers and even satellite-based internet access.
