Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G In Malaysia: All You Need To Know
Author Avatar

Samsung’s futuristic foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G, is coming to Malaysia very soon. The third iteration in Samsung’s range of unique folding display smartphones, the Z Fold2 brings about huge improvements from its predecessor, and is priced lower than the original Galaxy Fold.

What’s new on the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G?

One of the biggest strengths of the South Korean company is its ability to take consumer feedback and improve its products at lightning speed. While the Galaxy Fold was unique, it had several areas that could be improved.

For starters, the phone now looks and feels more premium than ever before, thanks to a combination of new hardware combined with new design cues. The sexy Mystic Bronze colourway introduced on the Galaxy Note 20 series makes its way here, as is the matte finish on the back. Meanwhile, the new Cover Screen on the Z Fold2 now spreads across the length of the phone, making it possible to use more efficiently than before. The Cover Screen now measures 6.2 inches across, significantly larger than the 4.6-inch display on the Galaxy Fold.

But unfolding the Z Fold2 is where you’ll find the biggest upgrades. The Main Screen has been given a complete overhaul. The first thing to notice is the tiny punch-hole camera on the display, replacing the Galaxy Fold’s large top-right corner slit. The display is now also using Samsung’s innovative Ultra-Thin Glass instead of plastic.

More importantly, the display technology itself saw a massive improvement: a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex Display with dynamic refresh rate – a first on any Samsung smartphone. While the recently-launched Galaxy Note 20 Ultra also features a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, it does not feature variable refresh rates. On the Galaxy Z Fold2, the display can go from super-smooth 120Hz all the way to 11Hz – a great way for the system to save battery life. Oh, and of course, the Z Fold2 display is foldable.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 also features an improved hinge. With key learning from the previous Galaxy Fold, the Z Fold2 now sports a brand new Hideaway Hinge with CAM mechanism. The hinge unlocks new ways to interact with the Z Fold2, as it is stiff enough to lock in multiple angles including a clamshell/laptop mode called Flex Mode. The software in several apps have also been redesigned to support this new display mode, taking advantage of the extra display space such as intuitively-placed controls in the video player and camera.

According to Samsung, the Hideaway Hinge packs several new technologies to ensure durability and protect the mechanism. These include a new, smaller “sweeper technology” unit located in the gap between the body and hinge housing that repels dust and dirt particles, a modified fibre composition, and an adjusted fibre density.

Specs

As one can expect from a flagship Samsung device, the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G is a beast. With 12GB of RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ chipset, this phone will breeze through running multiple apps simultaneously using Multi-Active Window, as well as heavy-duty apps. A generous 256GB internal storage also means you won’t need to worry about running out of space. Meanwhile, a unique 4,500mAh dual-battery system promises all-day battery life even when pushed hard; and if you need to top up, the phone naturally supports Samsung’s Super Fast Charging.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 also packs a total of 5 cameras. On both the Cover Screen and Main Screen, there’s a dedicated 10MP selfie camera, while the main camera setup is a triple-sensor unit, comprising of a 12MP main dual-pixel sensor, a 12MP ultrawide angle sensor, and a 12MP telephoto sensor. Thanks to the foldable display, you can also easily use the higher-quality main cameras to capture selfies.

As its name implies the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G also includes 5G support and ready for use in Malaysia. Finally, Samsung Pay is an ever-present feature as well, supporting both NFC- and MST-based payment options.

Price & Availability

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G will retail for RM7,999, slightly lower than the Galaxy Fold’s RM8,388 retail price.

It will be open for pre-orders starting 11 September 2020, and will be available at all retail outlets nationwide, leading e-commerce platforms, and major telcos from 25 September 2020.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G pre-order will start from 11 September and end on 24 September. All pre-orders will come with two bonus freebies: a pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds Live earbuds worth RM699 and a premium Montblanc Card Holder worth RM655. You can make your pre-orders with various retailers including Senheng, senQ, Harvey Norman, Urban Republic, and Courts.
