Every year, we expect the latest flagship smartphones to be more powerful, have superior cameras, and longer battery lives. And, naturally, companies like Samsung rarely disappoint – but now we’ve grown accustomed to incremental improvements that lack the “wow factor”. After all, what else can’t a smartphone do these days?
As it turns out, artificial intelligence (AI) is ready to change the way we interact not just with our smartphones, but with the world. Say hello to Galaxy AI by Samsung, debuting today with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

Normally, the highlights of every flagship smartphone launch is on the new hardware: from the latest processors, new camera sensors, and maybe even new materials. But with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series, the focus isn’t on what the phone has, but what it can do.
Samsung has released a suite of AI-powered features that will debut in the flagship Galaxy S24 series, all designed to enhance the things we already do on our smartphones: make calls, take photos, jot down notes, and reply to messages. In fairness, “enhance” doesn’t quite justify what Galaxy AI brings to the table. “Evolve” is perhaps the better word – here’s what to expect in the Galaxy S24 series.

This isn’t some basic voice-activated translation service – Live Translate is so much more than that. It is a real-time translation feature that’s built into the Phone app, allowing you to break the language barrier and communicate effectively even between different languages.
Best of all, Live Translate does not require both callers to use the Galaxy S24 series. As long as either person is using a Galaxy S24 series device, Live Translate may be activated.
For face-to-face conversations, Galaxy AI’s got you covered too. The Interpreter feature within Live Translate acts as the intermediary between two persons, providing a two-way translation interface on your Galaxy S24 device. With this feature, we can already see how it will make travelling to non-English speaking countries so much easier!

Chat Translation and Writing Style are actually two different AI enhancements rolled into one. These two features, built into the Samsung Keyboard, aim to assist you in different and meaningful ways.
Chat Translation, just like Live Translate, will translate messages received in different languages directly in-app within your chats, so you no longer need to go through the hassle of copying the foreign text, translate it on Google Translate, then pasting your reply. At launch, Chat Translation is supported on a variety of messaging apps including WhatsApp.
Meanwhile, Writing Style, as its name implies, helps you flesh out your notes and messages that can help you both in personal and professional settings.
It is quite interesting how it can work for you in different ways. You could type only keywords and bullet points and have Writing Style flesh it out for you. Besides that, it can also make suggestions to improve your sentences. Best of all, these suggestions are provided in a number of different tones and formats, from Professional, Casual, and even Social (complete with hashtags if you need any!).

Naturally, there are some enhancements for S Pen-related features and Samsung Notes too. Note Assist may sound simple, but it actually consists of a host of AI-powered features that centres around productivity.
For those who love the S Pen’s handwriting capabilities, you’ll be glad to hear that your handwritten notes can now be “reviewed” by Galaxy AI to unlock all kinds of things that you’d normally do manually. For example, Galaxy AI can convert your handwritten notes to text, and with auto-spacing and alignment done for you. From there, it can provide suggestions for spelling and grammar, and even better, the Auto Format feature can restructure your handwritten notes in different options and formats – simply pick the one that suits your purpose!
Next up is the ability to translate your notes or websites into different languages. On top of that, you can tap into Galaxy AI to summarise important points from your notes, and from what we learned from a live demo session, if the summary is still too long, you can get Galaxy AI to summarise the summary!

A phone of the Galaxy S24 series’ pedigree will naturally pack a heavy punch with its cameras. Besides the impressive hardware upgrades, the Galaxy S24 series will feature various photo editing functions – all powered by Galaxy AI.
Tap into AI-powered editing suggestions, from shadow and reflection removal to adding background blur effects. Meanwhile, generative AI technology powers the Background Fill feature to “fill in” the gaps in the background when you adjust the angle of images, allowing you to fix your composition without resorting to cropping. Lastly, go wild with Object Re-composition! Remove people and objects or even resize them as your creative heart desires and let Background Fill handle any gaps for you.

This feature, developed in partnership with Google, could revolutionise the way we search. Unlike the traditional way of using a search bar, Circle To Search is an intuitive way to search for anything you see on the phone. Saw a photo of a famous building but just can’t remember its name? Simply long-press the Home button and Circle the object you’d like to Search! The results are also context-heavy, providing as much information that may be relevant to your search.

With Galaxy AI, Samsung is approaching flagship smartphones in a completely different way. With less focus on hardware, the company has placed great faith in Galaxy AI – and it firmly believes this technology can improve the quality of life in truly meaningful ways.
But to really understand it, one must experience Galaxy AI to see how it empowers users to be able to do more.
