Saving money sounds simple until you actually try to do it. The plan is always the same: set aside RM500 this month, and the result is usually the same too. The car needs servicing, a friend’s birthday dinner comes up, and the money that was supposed to be “savings” gets spent because it was sitting right there in the main account.
The problem isn’t discipline. When savings and spending money live in the same place, every purchase becomes a tug-of-war between what’s needed now and what’s being saved for later. And the “now” almost always wins.
There’s a simple idea that makes saving significantly easier: keep your spending money and your savings in separate places. Behavioural economists call this “mental accounting,” but you can think of it as the digital version of your parents’ envelope system: one envelope for bills, one for groceries, one tucked away for emergencies.
Once money goes into the savings envelope, it’s gone from your daily spending view. You stop seeing it as available cash. That psychological separation is surprisingly powerful, because it removes the daily temptation to spend what you’ve already committed to saving.
The real question is how to do this without making it a chore. Manually transferring money between accounts every month requires you to remember, to decide how much, and to actually follow through. That’s three points of failure right there.
Maybank’s MAE Tabung is built specifically for this kind of partitioned saving. It works like a digital coin box inside the MAE app. You create a Tabung (or up to 10 of them), give it a name and a savings goal, and the money sits separately from your main spending balance. You can see it, but you won’t accidentally spend it on your next Grab ride or Shopee checkout.
The feature that makes the biggest difference is Auto Deduction. Set it up once, choose your amount, pick weekly or monthly, and the app handles the rest. Your savings happen on autopilot without you having to think about it, decide about it, or remember to do it. For a lot of people, that’s the difference between saving RM50 a month and saving nothing.
Then there are the Boosters, which let you save from your everyday spending without feeling the pinch. The ‘Spare Change’ Booster rounds up your Scan & Pay transactions to the nearest ringgit and puts the difference into your Tabung. Buy a RM9.10 lunch and RM0.90 goes straight to savings. The ‘Scan & Save’ Booster works with Scan & Pay promotions. If you use a 20% off promo on a RM100 purchase, the RM20 discount gets funnelled into your Tabung instead of just disappearing. And the ‘Guilty Pleasure’ Booster lets you set a daily spending limit for any category, say, RM50 on food, and automatically saves a set amount every time you exceed it. It turns overspending into a savings trigger.
If your Tabung is linked to a Maybank savings or current account, it earns interest at the same rate as a Kawanku Savings account. Do note that Tabungs linked to a MAE Wallet don’t earn interest.
Maybank is currently running the ‘JOM’ Tabung campaign from 22 January to 31 March 2026, and there’s a genuine incentive to get started now. Save RM1,000 in your Tabung by the end of the campaign period, and you could be one of 100 lucky winners to have that RM1,000 matched by Maybank as a cash prize.
To qualify, you need to complete three steps:
1. Transfer at least RM200 from another bank or e-wallet into your Maybank account or MAE Wallet. When you make the transfer, include the word ‘JOM’ in the Recipient Reference field (this is mandatory — it won’t count if you put it anywhere else).
2. Create a new Tabung in the MAE app and include ‘JOM’ in the Tabung name. It has to be a brand new Tabung created during the campaign period — renaming an existing one won’t work.
3. Save at least RM1,000 in your ‘JOM’ Tabung by 31 March 2026.
That gets you one entry into the draw. You can earn additional entries by turning on Auto Deduction, activating any Booster, funding your Tabung at least twice during the campaign, and for every additional RM1,000 saved. You can even create multiple JOM Tabungs to increase your chances, though each customer can only win one prize.
Setting up a Tabung takes about five minutes, and the Auto Deduction feature means you only need to make a decision once. After that, your savings grow without you having to actively do anything. For most of us, this is the kind of savings plan that actually sticks.
