The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has issued a reminder to resident individuals not engaged in business activities that the deadline for submitting income tax returns for the 2024 assessment year is Thursday, 15 May 2025.

In its statement, the IRB clarified that this applies to a wide range of resident and non-resident taxpayers, including knowledge workers, skilled professionals, expatriates in key positions, and members of Hindu joint families, as well as estates of deceased persons.

Tax returns must be submitted using the e-Form via the MyTax portal, accessible at https://mytax.hasil.gov.my, or through the IRB’s official website under MyTax > Perkhidmatan ezHasil > e-Filing.

The IRB urged taxpayers to fulfil their obligations promptly by accurately declaring all income and ensuring that any tax due is paid within the designated timeframe. Delays in submission or payment may result in penalties, tax surcharges, or legal enforcement.

To avoid complications in receiving tax refunds, taxpayers are advised to ensure their personal and banking details are complete and up to date.

The IRB further stressed that failure to file the Income Tax Return Form or to report actual income could lead to enforcement action under the Income Tax Act 1967. Section 112(1) of the Act provides for a fine ranging from RM200 to RM20,000, imprisonment for a term of up to six months, or both, for such offences.

Late submissions may also incur a 10% increase on the amount of tax owed, as stipulated under Section 103(3) of the same Act. For guidance on how to file your taxes, including step-by-step instructions, refer to the Malaysia Personal Income Tax Guide 2025 (YA 2024)
