Huat Ah! How To Send e-Ang Pows In Malaysia For CNY 2026
Author Avatar

Every Chinese New Year, the same question pops up in family WhatsApp groups: “Eh, how to send e-ang pow ah?” And every year, the answer changes slightly as banks and e-wallets update their apps, add new features, or run festive campaigns.

To make things easy this CNY, we’ve tested all the e-wallet and bank apps and put together this step-by-step guide for you.

E-Wallets Are Fun And Festive

E-wallets are where the e-ang pow experience gets interactive: gamified “lucky draw” amounts, festive designs, and shareable links for group chats. If you want your ang pows to feel more fun than a plain bank transfer, these are your best options. Don’t forget to install the e-wallet app of your choice to claim the full ang pow experience!

Touch ‘n Go eWallet Money Packet

One of the most popular options, letting you send ang pows to groups where everyone “fights” for a random share, or split equally. Perfect for large family groups.

  1. Tap Transfer → Money Packet → Create Money Packet
  2. Choose your mode:
    • Random: Total amount divided randomly among recipients (e.g., RM88 for 10 people; some might get RM15, others RM3)
    • Equal: Everyone receives the same amount
  3. Enter a festive message (“Huat ah!” or “Gong Xi Fa Cai”)
  4. Authenticate with PIN or Face ID
  5. Share the generated link or QR code to WhatsApp or WeChat

Gifting Festive Vouchers Via GrabGifts

Send festive e-ang pows via GrabGifts vouchers for rides, food, or GrabMart deliveries.

  1. Tap More  → Gifts
  2. Choose between ‘Happy New Year’, ‘Fortune Knot’, ‘HUAT AH!’, and ‘Wealthy’ e-Ang Pow Gifts.
  3. Choose your contacts via phone number or email. Then tap ‘Confirm’.
  4. Pick your gifts. Select your preferred voucher choice, eg: ‘Grab Trasnport’, ‘GrabFood’, ‘GrabMart’, and more. Tap to confirm your options.
  5. Choose a GrabGift voucher amount. Tap to confirm the amount.
  6. Customise your message. Tap to confirm.
  7. Check the details of your gift. When you’re ready, tap ‘Pay and Send Gift’.

ShopeePay e-Ang Pow

ShopeePay’s feature is straightforward and comes with a safety net: unclaimed amounts are automatically refunded after 24 hours.

  1. Go to ShopeePay Wallet → Transfer → Send Ang Bao
  2. Choose Random or Fixed Amount
  3. Select the number of recipients and the total amount
  4. Share the link with your friends

Bank Apps Are Reliable And High-Limit

Every major Malaysian bank now supports e-ang pows through DuitNow, which works the same across all banks. The main advantage: the recipient doesn’t need to install anything, and the money lands directly in their account. Bank transfers also usually allow higher amounts than e-wallets—handy for parents, in-laws, or larger gifts.

DuitNow e-Ang Pows Across All Banks

  1. Open your banking app → Transfer → DuitNow
  2. Enter the recipient’s mobile number
  3. Enter the amount
  4. Type “Ang Pow” or “Gong Xi Fa Cai” in the reference note
  5. Authenticate and send

If your app doesn’t show a dedicated “e-Ang Pow” button, this method always works.

Banks With Dedicated e-Ang Pow Features

  • Maybank MAE App has a Send e-Angpao icon, festive greetings, and a Scan & Win contest; transfers are approved via Secure2u
  • CIMB Octo App has a festive message toggle that attaches a digital greeting card to your transfer
  • Hong Leong HLB Connect shows a seasonal e-Ang Pow button with “Huat” greeting designs
  • AmBank AmOnline supports DuitNow with festive receipts

How To Pick The Right Platform

All of these options get your money from A to B. The real question is which platform suits each recipient, and if you’re still figuring out how much to put in each ang pow, we’ve got a guide for that too.

For parents and older relatives, DuitNow through any bank app is the safest choice. The money lands directly in their bank account, they don’t need to download anything, and there’s no risk of an unclaimed ang pow expiring. If your mum uses Maybank and you use CIMB, it still works.

For friends and cousins in group chats, e-wallet ang pows are more fun. Touch ‘n Go’s random Money Packet turns ang pow giving into a mini game, and ShopeePay’s 24-hour auto-refund means you won’t lose money to someone who forgot to claim theirs.

For larger amounts (say, RM200 and above to in-laws or parents), bank transfers give you higher limits and a clearer transaction trail. E-wallets usually cap individual transfers at lower amounts, and some recipients may not be comfortable holding large sums in an e-wallet.

And if you’re on the receiving end this CNY, think about where to park that money. Check out the best high-interest savings accounts and fixed deposit comparison articles on RinggitPlus.
