Every Chinese New Year, the same question pops up in family WhatsApp groups: “Eh, how to send e-ang pow ah?” And every year, the answer changes slightly as banks and e-wallets update their apps, add new features, or run festive campaigns.
To make things easy this CNY, we’ve tested all the e-wallet and bank apps and put together this step-by-step guide for you.
E-wallets are where the e-ang pow experience gets interactive: gamified “lucky draw” amounts, festive designs, and shareable links for group chats. If you want your ang pows to feel more fun than a plain bank transfer, these are your best options. Don’t forget to install the e-wallet app of your choice to claim the full ang pow experience!

One of the most popular options, letting you send ang pows to groups where everyone “fights” for a random share, or split equally. Perfect for large family groups.

Send festive e-ang pows via GrabGifts vouchers for rides, food, or GrabMart deliveries.

ShopeePay’s feature is straightforward and comes with a safety net: unclaimed amounts are automatically refunded after 24 hours.
Every major Malaysian bank now supports e-ang pows through DuitNow, which works the same across all banks. The main advantage: the recipient doesn’t need to install anything, and the money lands directly in their account. Bank transfers also usually allow higher amounts than e-wallets—handy for parents, in-laws, or larger gifts.
If your app doesn’t show a dedicated “e-Ang Pow” button, this method always works.
All of these options get your money from A to B. The real question is which platform suits each recipient, and if you’re still figuring out how much to put in each ang pow, we’ve got a guide for that too.
For parents and older relatives, DuitNow through any bank app is the safest choice. The money lands directly in their bank account, they don’t need to download anything, and there’s no risk of an unclaimed ang pow expiring. If your mum uses Maybank and you use CIMB, it still works.
For friends and cousins in group chats, e-wallet ang pows are more fun. Touch ‘n Go’s random Money Packet turns ang pow giving into a mini game, and ShopeePay’s 24-hour auto-refund means you won’t lose money to someone who forgot to claim theirs.
For larger amounts (say, RM200 and above to in-laws or parents), bank transfers give you higher limits and a clearer transaction trail. E-wallets usually cap individual transfers at lower amounts, and some recipients may not be comfortable holding large sums in an e-wallet.
