If there’s one thing that can bring Malaysians together, it’s makan! And with Malaysia Day just around the corner, there are plenty of promotions to check out if a meal is part of your plans.
From RM5.80 sushi and RM6.90 kopi to buffets, set meals and second-drink discounts, we’ve rounded up the Malaysia Day deals that we think you should know about. And if you’re not planning a makan session, there are also promotions on groceries, home appliances, fashion and more.
Makan-makan Deals
Most of these are set combos and buffets rather than percentage discounts, so you’ll see the savings most clearly on a meal you were already going out for.
The Chicken Rice Shop: The Combo Local Lah gets you crispy roast chicken rice, a local side and a 12oz drink for RM16.90, running until 20 September.
Marrybrown: Order a regular-priced Nasi Lemak MB combo and the second combo (choose from Nasi Lemak MB, Nasi Kandar, Nasi Ayam MB, Bubur Ayam MB or Bubur Pedas) costs RM6.90, until 17 September.
Sushiro: The Special Selection menu brings sushi, hot dishes and desserts from RM5.80, running in two phases from 4 to 30 September. Phase two starts on 16 September itself, though it isn’t available at the Sushiro Sunway Pyramid outlet.
IKEA: The Swedish Restaurant’s National Day menu, with Nasi Lemak Basmati sets from RM13.90, runs until 30 September.
St. Giles Southkey: The Malaysia Day Buffet, Flavours of Unity, at Causeway Café in Johor Bahru rotates through four Malaysian culinary themes across September weekends, with Buy 3, Get 1 Free on adult buffet meals (RM138 nett, RM98 nett for seniors, RM68 nett for children). From 7 September onwards.
Supamala Hotpot: Unlimited Angus beef buffet for 2 pax at RM98, at the Bangsar Shopping Centre and Sunway Pyramid outlets.
Drinks And Coffee
A few chains are marking the occasion with local flavours and second-cup discounts.
Gong Cha: 69% off a second Winter Melon drink under the NikmaTea Kemerdekaan promo, running through both Merdeka and Malaysia Day.
Luckin Coffee: Two Gula Melaka-based drinks under the “Rasa Kita, Cerita Kita” special, from 14 August. No fixed end date announced.
Kenangan Coffee: Exclusive Kopi Kenangan Malaysia for RM6.90.
Convenience Stores And Groceries
Supermarkets and convenience stores are running catalogue promotions on everyday essentials this month.
Giant: The Hari Malaysia Promotion Catalogue covers groceries and local brands at low prices, running from 3 to 16 September, right through Malaysia Day itself.
99 Speedmart: Groceries from RM1.59, tied to their 69th Merdeka and 39th anniversary sale, running until 17 September.
MR.DIY: The “Jom Beli Barangan Malaysia” promotion brings Buy 1 Free 1 deals and household discounts of up to 50% off nationwide, from 1 to 30 September.
Tech, Home And Big-Ticket Buys
If a new appliance or a home upgrade has been sitting on your list, several retailers are offering rebates in the hundreds or thousands.
MPH Bookstores: Mega Deals at MPH The Exchange TRX, with up to 50% off and Crazy Deals items as low as RM5. Part of MPH’s 120th anniversary celebrations, running 2 to 16 September.
Electrolux at Ban Hin Bee: Savings of up to RM1,700 plus Touch ‘n Go eWallet rewards of up to RM500 on selected kitchen hoods, hobs, ovens, refrigerators, dryers and more. Billed as a Merdeka & Malaysia Day campaign, running 16 August to 16 September.
Alpha Malaysia: Up to RM138 Touch ‘n Go cashback plus an extended warranty on selected Alkova, AlphaFan and Vannus ceiling and general fans, until 30 September.
Harvey Norman: The Malaysia Day Mega Sale, with up to 70% off plus free gift cards worth up to RM9,000.
Le Creuset: Up to 40% off selected items in their Malaysia Day Promotion, from 3 September onwards at participating boutiques and online.
Fashion And Beauty
Two department store promotions are worth a look for a wardrobe or vanity refresh.
SOGO: The Merdeka & Malaysia Day Sale at the Beau4ty Hall offers complimentary gift sets (pouches, miniatures and samples) with selected 100ml fragrance purchases from Gucci, Burberry, Chloé, Hugo Boss, Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein. At all SOGO stores, until 16 September.
Furla: An RM69 rebate with a RM1,600 purchase, at Genting Highlands Premium Outlets, from 21 August to 16 September.
On The Road And In Your Wallet
Both national carmakers are running service promotions this month.
Perodua: 10% off parts and labour plus a RM70 cash rebate, until 30 September.
Proton: A similar service promo, until 17 September.
Making Your Malaysia Day Ringgit Count
Keep an eye on the expiry dates, as several of these promotions end on 16 September rather than running until the end of the month. Giant’s catalogue, MPH’s Mega Deals at TRX, the Electrolux offer at Ban Hin Bee, the SOGO fragrance gifts and the Furla rebate all end on Malaysia Day itself. MR.DIY, IKEA, Alpha Malaysia and Perodua, meanwhile, have promotions running until 30 September, giving you a little more time to decide.
Check the fine print before you head out, especially for deals limited to certain outlets, products or models. Where possible, stack a promotion with your usual cashback card or e-wallet to get a little more back. Just don’t let a big discount tempt you into spending more than planned. A discount only saves you money if you were already planning to buy the item.
