Maybank has announced that it will be offering RM10 and RM50 bank notes for CNY 2024 at various Maybank ATMs throughout the country. However, the notes will be “recycled fit” instead of new ones as part of the recent sustainability efforts that has seen shortages of new bank note availability for the coming Chinese New Year.
In total, there will be 58 Maybank ATMs across Malaysia that will provide this service. For added convenience, Maybank states that the specific ATMs that can dispense the RM10 and RM50 bank notes will be clearly labelled. However, do note that not all branches with have ATMs that dispense both RM10 and RM50 – the full list can be found here.
In line with the Association of Banks in Malaysia’s (ABM) recommendation to switch to e-angpow options to promote sustainability, Maybank also noted that instant transfers can be made via DuitNow Transfer on the MAE app.
This year’s prelude to the Chinese New Year celebrations has been marked by a noticeable shortage of new bank notes. In previous years, various banks will announce availability of these fresh bank notes weeks in advance to allow the Chinese community to exchange their used or old notes. In Chinese culture, the use of new bank notes – and the offering of physical ang pow – is a long-standing tradition that many have found difficult to emulate via digital or electronic means.
