Apple appears to have increased the price of its existing iPad range in several of its markets outside of the United States and Canada, following the launch of the latest 10th generation iPad and iPad Pro models yesterday. This affects Malaysian customers as well, who will now have to pay between RM100 to RM400 more to purchase the iPad mini 6, iPad Air 5, and the 9th generation iPad – depending on the model.
Accordingly, Apple Malaysia’s website has been updated to show the revised prices of all the iPad devices, as per the following:
iPad range | Models | Previous price | Updated price |
iPad mini 6 | – WiFi 64GB – WiFi 256GB – Cellular 64GB – Cellular 256GB | RM2,299 RM2,949 RM2,949 RM3,599 | RM2,399 RM3,149 RM3,149 RM3,899 |
iPad Air 5 | – WiFi 64GB – WiFi 256GB – Cellular 64GB – Cellular 256GB | RM2,699 RM3,349 RM3,349 RM3,999 | RM2,899 RM3,649 RM3,649 RM4,399 |
iPad (9th generation) | – WiFi 64GB – WiFi 256GB – Cellular 64GB – Cellular 256GB | RM1,499 RM2,149 RM2,119 RM2,769 | RM1,599 RM2,249 RM2,349 RM2,999 |
This price hike – while somewhat unexpected amidst all the excitement from the launch of the latest iPad (10th gen) and iPad Pro models – is most likely attributed to currency fluctuations, with the ringgit (and various other currencies) having depreciated significantly against the US dollar. Specifically, the ringgit has languished at a 24-year low against the greenback.
Moreover, currency fluctuations, too, have been cited as a reason for Apple to recently hike the price of apps and in-app purchases on the App Store in various countries across Asia and Europe. In its announcement back in September, Apple said this revision was set to take effect from as early as 5 October 2022.
