Step-by-Step Guide To Filing Your Taxes For The First Time
Author Avatar

Filing taxes for the first time can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re a salaried employee, a freelancer, or earning income through other sources, filing taxes is a crucial step in ensuring your financial obligations are met. As a first-time filer, it’s important to understand the process clearly so you don’t miss out on opportunities for tax reliefs and deductions that can help reduce your tax burden. By following the right steps and using available resources, you can make the filing process simple, organised, and stress-free.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know—from determining if you’re required to file, to registering for a Tax Identification Number (TIN), to submitting your tax return online via the MyTax portal. We’ve broken down each step to ensure you can confidently file your taxes and ensure compliance with Malaysia’s tax laws.

1. Determine If You Need to File Taxes

Before diving into the filing process, the first thing you need to do is determine whether you are required to file taxes. If your annual income exceeds RM37,333 (after EPF deductions), you must file a tax return.

However, even if your income falls below this threshold, it’s still a good idea to file for record-keeping purposes, especially if you plan to apply for loans, scholarships, or other financial opportunities in the future.

2. Register For A Tax Identification Number (TIN)

As a first-time taxpayer, you will need to register for a Tax Identification Number (TIN). This unique identifier allows the LHDN to process your tax filings.

To register:

  • Visit the MyTax Portal and click on e-Daftar.
  • Fill out the registration form and upload a scanned copy of your IC (front and back).
  • Submit your registration and wait for LHDN to process your application, which typically takes a few days. Once approved, you will receive your TIN via email.

3. Log in to MyTax and Begin e-Filing

Once you have your TIN, head over to the MyTax Portal to begin your filing process:

  • Go to MyTax and log in using your TIN.
  • If this is your first time logging in, you will need to create a new password.

Afterward, you can access your personal dashboard. For first-time users, select the First Time Login option, and follow the steps to create your login details.

4. Choose the Right Tax Form

The type of tax return form you will need to file depends on your source of income. You will typically choose between:

  • Form BE: For individuals with only employment income.
  • Form B: For individuals with business, freelance, or additional income streams.

Once you’ve selected the right form, the platform will guide you through the necessary steps.

5. Update Your Personal Information

After selecting the correct form, the next step is to review and update your personal details. Make sure that your name, address, marital status, and other personal information are up to date. If you’ve sold any properties or assets in the previous year, you’ll also need to declare that information as it may be subject to Real Property Gains Tax (RPGT).

6. Declare Your Income and Tax Reliefs

Now, it’s time to declare your income. This includes salary, freelance income, rental income, or any other earnings you may have.

You’ll also need to include:

Your monthly tax deductions (MTD/PCB): This can be found in your EA Form, which your employer provides.

You may be eligible for tax reliefs such as:

  • EPF Contributions – Up to RM4,000
  • Life & Medical Insurance – Up to RM3,000
  • Education & Self-Development Courses – Up to RM7,000
  • Lifestyle Purchases (books, gadgets, etc.) – Up to RM2,500

For the full list of tax reliefs that you can claim for YA 2024, click here. Make sure to keep receipts for all claims, as LHDN may request proof of purchase.

7. Review the Summary Page and Check Your Tax Calculation

Once all the information is entered, the platform will automatically calculate your chargeable tax and potential refunds. Double-check that all your details, income declarations, and tax reliefs are correct before proceeding to submit.

8. Submit Your Tax Return

When you’re completed the form, it’s time to submit it. Click on the “Sign and Submit” button and verify your identity by entering your NRIC and password. After submitting, you’ll receive an acknowledgment page that you can save or print for your records.

9. Pay Your Tax or Receive Your Refund

If you owe taxes, you can make payments online via:

  • FPX Online Banking
  • Credit/Debit Cards
  • Bank Counter Services

If you’re entitled to a tax refund, LHDN will process it and transfer the refund to your bank account.

10. Important Tax Filing Deadlines

  • For individuals with employment income only (Form BE): 30 April
  • For individuals with business or freelance income (Form B): 30 June

Be sure to file before the deadlines to avoid any late penalties!

11. Keep Your Records for Future Reference

After you’ve filed, make sure to keep a copy of your tax return and supporting documents (such as receipts and forms) for at least 7 years. This is important in case LHDN requests an audit of your returns.

By registering early, keeping track of your income, and taking advantage of tax reliefs, you can ensure a smooth filing experience.
