Expert: Government Should Establish Stores Selling Affordable Items To Help B40, M40 Groups

Economic analyst Assoc Prof Dr Yusof Saari has proposed for the government to establish stores that offer daily essentials at affordable prices. This is especially to help the B40 and M40 income groups cope with the rising cost of living in the country. 

According to Assoc Prof Dr Yusof, such stores can be set up near B40 and M40 residential areas. “To ensure that these benefits are received by the target group, the government can provide a special card, and only individuals with this card can make purchases at the store,“ he further proposed.

Aside from that, Assoc Prof Dr Yusof also suggested that the government should conduct surveys on the subsidies that are currently being provided, such as the subsidy for cooking oil in 1kg polybag packages. This is to determine whether the subsidies have been effective in helping those in need. 

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob reaffirmed the government’s commitment to address the issue of increasing prices of goods within the country. This includes implementing initiatives such as providing continuous subsidies for various commodities, including chicken, eggs, cooking oil, fuel, and water. The government had also reversed its decision to float the price of chickens, and established a special task force, Jihad Tangani Inflasi, to tackle inflation issues.
