Free MyKad Chip Replacements Offered Nationwide To Support Budi95
Author Avatar

The Home Ministry has announced a nationwide initiative to provide free replacement of damaged MyKad chips, also known as the National Registration Identity Card (NRIC). The exercise runs from 23 September until 7 October 2025 and is held in conjunction with the launch of the Budi95 subsidy programme.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the initiative aims to ensure Malaysians continue to access targeted subsidies under Budi95 without disruption.

Rising Number Of Damaged MyKad Chips

According to National Registration Department (NRD) data, 294,715 replacement applications for damaged chips or cards were received between January and August this year. The numbers have been increasing steadily, with 32,819 applications in June, 40,371 in July, and 45,411 in August. For September, up to 21 September, there were already 22,858 applications recorded.

On average, about 43,000 faulty chip replacement requests are made each month.

Government To Cover Costs

Saifuddin Nasution said the free replacement exercise is expected to cost the government around RM714,660, including related expenses. The cost will be fully borne by the government during the two-week period to avoid any disruption to subsidy access.

“The government is committed to ensuring that no Malaysian is denied access to Budi95 subsidies due to technical issues with their MyKad,” he said.

Background On Budi95

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the launch of the Budi95 initiative yesterday. The programme introduces targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol, replacing the blanket subsidy system. It is designed to ensure that fuel subsidies are channelled fairly to those who need them most, while reducing leakage and improving fiscal management.

Access to Budi95 subsidies will be verified through the MyKad system, which makes a functioning chip essential for eligible Malaysians. The free replacement exercise supports this transition by preventing technical issues from blocking subsidy access.

Importance Of Maintaining The MyKad

The minister also reminded Malaysians to take care of their MyKad, describing it as both a crucial identity document and a key to various government services.

“The government stands by the principles of care and inclusivity, ensuring that every Malaysian receives the benefits promised without anyone being left behind,” he added.
