Govt Approves 50% Toll Discount For CNY 2026
Author Avatar

The government has approved a 50% toll discount for two days in conjunction with the Chinese New Year 2026 celebrations. The announcement was made by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi following a Cabinet meeting.

The discount will be in effect from 12.01am on Saturday, 14 February, until 11.59pm on Sunday, 15 February. The move is expected to cost the government RM19.5 million in compensation payments to highway concessionaires.

Discount Applies To Selected Vehicle Classes And Toll Plazas

The toll discount applies to Class 1 vehicles, which include private passenger cars, at all toll plazas nationwide. It also applies to Class 2 vehicles at the Penang Bridge.

However, the discount does not apply to toll plazas at Malaysia’s international borders. Excluded locations include the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex on the North South Expressway operated by Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan Berhad, as well as the Tanjung Kupang Toll Plaza on the Malaysia Singapore Second Link operated by Linkedua.

Motorists travelling through these border crossings will be required to pay the full toll rate during the discount period.

Timing Chosen To Manage Traffic And Operations

According to the works minister, the selected dates were intended to reduce the risk of severe traffic congestion during peak travel periods. The timing also allows highway operators to better manage traffic flow, rest and service area capacity, and operational logistics during the festive season.

The discount coincides with increased travel activity for Chinese New Year and for Malaysians planning trips ahead of the Ramadan period.

Travel Planning And Traffic Advisory For Motorists

Highway users are advised to plan their journeys carefully and comply with all speed limits and road signage. Motorists are encouraged to use official navigation tools such as the MyPLUS Travel Time Advisory and the TuJu Highway Navigation application to identify recommended travel times.

Real-time traffic updates are available through official channels operated by the Malaysian Highway Authority. Drivers may also contact the Traffic Management Centre for the latest information before beginning their journey.
