The government has agreed to extend the Wage Subsidy Programme for an additional month for all economy sectors that are affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and the full lockdown (FMCO). This was announced as part of the latest PEMERKASA+ stimulus package.

This extension will continue from the Wage Subsidy Programme 3.0 under PERKESO, allowing employers to apply for a wage subsidy of RM600 for employees with a salary of less than RM4,000. The number of eligible employees allowed for this programme is limited to 500 employees per company.

According to Muhyiddin, this extension of the programme will cost the government RM1.5 billion in total, and is expected to benefit more than 200,000 employers with 2.5 million employees.

The Wage Subsidy Programme was first introduced via the Prihatin economic stimulus package last year, and has since been extended several times with some updates to its implementation. The programme was intended to help companies keep from laying off employees during this difficult period of time.
