You can take the Penang ferry for free on the first and second days of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, covering routes between Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal and Raja Tun Uda Terminal.
The initiative applies to all Malaysian passengers and is timed to support travel during the festive period, which is expected to fall on 21 March.
Penang Port Commission said the move is part of ongoing efforts, together with Penang Port Sdn Bhd, to make travel easier during peak holiday periods.
The free rides are intended to help reduce traffic congestion, especially as more people travel between the island and the mainland during Hari Raya.
At the same time, the initiative encourages greater use of public transport, particularly ferry services, as a more efficient and sustainable way to get around.
Alongside the ferry initiative, the Penang Port Commission is also offering free entry to the Penang Ferry Museum for Malaysian children aged 12 and below. The “Kids Go Free Aidilfitri Special” campaign will run from 23 to 25 March.
The programme is part of the commission’s 70th anniversary celebrations and aims to promote the ferry museum as both a learning space and a heritage attraction.
For travellers heading across the Penang Strait during Hari Raya, the free ferry rides remove a small but immediate transport cost.
During festive periods, when expenses tend to be higher due to travel, food, and celebrations, even modest savings can add up. For families travelling together, the cost difference may be more noticeable.
The initiative also provides an alternative to driving, which may help avoid congestion and reduce fuel and toll expenses during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
At the same time, the benefit is limited to a specific window, covering only the first two days of Hari Raya. Outside of this period, standard fares will continue to apply.
