Physical Driving Licence Application Rules Updated
Author Avatar

Members of the public can apply for a physical printout of their Malaysian driving licence without submitting proof of overseas travel starting Friday, 23 January 2025.

The Ministry of Transport confirmed the change in a statement on Thursday, saying the decision was made after receiving feedback from Malaysians who plan to travel and need a physical driving licence to drive abroad.

JPJ Instructed To Remove Travel Document Requirement

Previously, drivers applying for a physical driving licence card were required to show proof of leaving the country, such as a flight ticket.

To reduce administrative barriers, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has now been instructed to stop requesting proof of overseas travel for these applications. This change is already in effect and applies nationwide.

Where And How To Apply For A Physical Licence

Applications for a physical driving licence printout can be made at all JPJ counters and Urban Transformation Centres across the country.

A printing fee of RM20 applies to Malaysian citizens, while non-citizens are charged RM100 for the same service.

Groups That Continue To Receive Free Physical Licences

Certain groups will continue to receive physical driving licence printouts at no charge. This includes senior citizens aged 60 and above, holders of Class A and A1 licences, and persons with disabilities who are registered with the Department of Social Welfare.

These exemptions remain unchanged under the updated policy.

Digital Licence Option Remains Available Via MyJPJ

Drivers who choose not to apply for a physical card can continue using the digital driving licence available through the MyJPJ application.

The digital licence is issued free of charge and can be renewed online without visiting a JPJ office, offering a lower-cost and more convenient option for everyday use within Malaysia.

Digital Licence Adoption Continues To Grow

The Ministry of Transport said the MyJPJ application has recorded 13 million users since the digital driving licence policy was introduced in February 2023.

According to the ministry, this reflects growing public acceptance of digital services, particularly for routine matters such as licence renewal, which can now be completed entirely online.
