Train and airport rail commuters are set to pay less, with the government announcing a package of fare discounts covering intercity trains, airport rail services, and regular commuter passes. Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced the initiative on 14 April 2026, describing it as a response to rising fuel costs driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The package involves Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), Express Rail Link (ERL), and Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, each offering separate discounts under the same rollout.
On intercity rail, KTMB is offering a 30% discount on all Electric Train Service (ETS) sectors as well as the Ekspres Rakyat Timuran (ERT) service along the JB Sentral to Tumpat route. The discount applies to weekday travel from Monday to Thursday and is not available on school or public holidays. Booking opens from 15 April to 30 April 2026, with valid travel dates running until 14 October 2026. A promotional code from KTMB is required to access the fare. The reduction does not apply to Business Class or First Class and Sleeper Class tickets, and existing concession holders are also excluded.
ERL is introducing two new monthly travel cards. The MyPutrajaya Monthly Travel Card is for civil servants working or residing in Putrajaya, while the MyKLIA Monthly Travel Card is for Malaysians working at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2. Both offer unlimited travel during the promotion period with discounts of up to 90% compared to standard rates depending on the travel sector. Specific card pricing will be announced separately by ERL.
For Klang Valley commuters, the My50 unlimited monthly travel pass for Prasarana rail and bus services remains at RM50 per month, a pricing level the minister noted is relied on by 40% of daily commuters in the region. Prasarana is also offering a Rapid Kota pass at RM10 per day or RM25 for three days for less frequent users, and a Rapid Keluarga pass at RM30 for unlimited one-day group travel for up to four people on weekends and public holidays.
Malaysians flying between the peninsula and East Malaysia will receive a RM50 discount on tickets during the Gawai and Kaamatan period from 15 May to 14 June 2026. The discount applies to Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air, is expected to benefit around 100,000 travellers, and is funded by a RM5 million allocation from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM). Airlines will announce further details separately.
The measures come as jet fuel prices have more than doubled since late February 2026, rising from around US$90 (approximately RM391) to US$197 (approximately RM857) per barrel as of 10 April 2026. For everyday commuters, the most straightforward saving in this package remains the My50 pass and the KTMB weekday discount, though the latter requires attention to the booking window and promotional code before travel dates are confirmed.
