Time Of Use Tariff Now Available Via The myTNB App

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) now allows customers to switch to its Time of Use tariff directly through the myTNB app, enabling eligible users to apply and track their status digitally without visiting nearby Kedai Tenaga outlets. The in-app application follows a four-step process and forms part of TNB’s wider rollout of digital services for residential electricity customers.

Recent Changes To Malaysia’s Electricity Tariff Structure

As of 1 July 2025, electricity bills in Peninsular Malaysia are calculated under a revised tariff structure. One of the key changes is the introduction of the Automatic Fuel Adjustment mechanism, which updates electricity tariffs monthly based on movements in global fuel prices. This replaces the earlier Imbalance Cost Pass-Through system, which reviewed fuel costs every six months under the Incentive-Based Regulation framework.

The revised tariff forms part of Malaysia’s broader energy reforms under the National Energy Transition Roadmap. Alongside a revised base tariff set by the Energy Commission, the new structure simplifies energy charges, introduces targeted support for lower-usage households, and expands demand management tools such as the Energy Efficiency Incentive and the Time of Use tariff.

Time Based Pricing Under The Time of Use Tariff

The Time of Use tariff, also known as Skim Masa Penggunaan, applies different electricity rates at different times of the day. Electricity consumed during off peak periods is charged at a lower rate, while usage during peak hours is billed at a higher rate.

The tariff operates under Malaysia’s existing electricity pricing framework and is already in force. Customers are not required to change their electricity supply contract to apply for the scheme.

Eligibility And Meter Requirements

Applications for the Time of Use tariff are open to registered myTNB account holders. Customers with an activated smart meter can proceed directly with the tariff switch, as their electricity usage data already supports time based billing.

Customers without an activated smart meter may still apply. In these cases, the process includes smart meter installation and activation before the tariff change is implemented.

In App Application Process

The myTNB app includes a dedicated Time of Use option on the home screen. Customers select the feature, choose the account for the tariff change, review scheme details, and confirm the application after verifying personal and account information.

Once the application is submitted, a reference number is issued, and the application status can be tracked directly within the app.

Processing Time And Activation

For customers with an active smart meter, the tariff change is typically processed within five working days. Updates are provided via email and through the myTNB app.

For customers without an active smart meter, the full process, including installation and activation, may take up to two months. Actual timelines depend on site readiness and scheduling availability.

Impact On Household Electricity Management

The digital application process gives households greater visibility and control over their electricity usage. Customers who are able to shift consumption to off peak periods may manage electricity costs more effectively while responding to time based pricing signals.

At a system level, wider adoption of time based tariffs supports more balanced electricity demand throughout the day.

Checking Time of Use Tariff Details

Detailed information on the Time of Use tariff, including applicable time bands and conditions, is available on TNB’s official website under the Skim Masa Penggunaan section.

Customers who already use the myTNB app for billing and account management can now complete the entire tariff switch process within a single platform, with status tracking available throughout the application period.
