Tenaga Nasional Berhad has reminded households to use electricity prudently amid the ongoing hot weather and the upcoming festive period, when energy consumption typically increases.
Electricity usage tends to rise during hotter months as cooling appliances such as air conditioners and fans operate for longer hours. During festive celebrations, extended cooking, decorative lighting, and hosting gatherings can further add to household electricity demand.
The utility company noted that the combination of hot weather and festive activities may result in higher electricity bills, as well as increased safety risks if electrical systems are not properly managed.
Electricity Demand Likely To Increase During Festive Period
Festive gatherings often require multiple appliances to operate at the same time, particularly in kitchens and living areas where guests are hosted.
Air conditioners, refrigerators, ovens, rice cookers, water heaters, and decorative lights are commonly used more intensively during this period. When several high-powered appliances run simultaneously, overall electricity consumption rises and home wiring systems may face greater strain.
Being aware of usage patterns during peak periods can help households manage consumption more effectively.
Key Electrical Safety Precautions At Home
Households are advised to switch off the main power supply when leaving home and unplug appliances that are not in use.
Electrical appliances should be kept away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and flammable materials such as curtains or paper. Sockets, plugs, and wiring should be checked regularly to ensure they are not damaged or loose.
Residual Current Devices, also known as Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers or Residual Current Circuit Breakers, should be tested periodically to confirm they are functioning properly. For any wiring or repair works, homeowners should engage contractors registered with the Energy Commission.
It is also advisable to use electrical appliances and decorative lights certified by SIRIM and approved by the Energy Commission, avoid overloading sockets, and refrain from using extension cords for high-powered appliances.
Mobile phones should not be charged while being actively used, and electrical appliances should not be left operating unattended. Fireworks and festive materials should be kept away from electrical poles and cables.
Practical Steps To Manage Electricity Consumption
Setting air-conditioner temperatures between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius, cleaning filters regularly, and ensuring proper ventilation can improve cooling efficiency and reduce unnecessary energy use.
Refrigerators should be arranged to allow adequate airflow, and doors should not be opened more frequently than necessary. Decorative lights can be placed on timers, and natural daylight can be maximised during daytime hours to reduce reliance on artificial lighting.
Households may also plan appliance usage to avoid running several high-powered appliances simultaneously. Limiting water heater use, switching off rice cookers after cooking and transferring food into insulated containers, ironing clothes in bulk, and drying clothes under sunlight instead of using a dryer can further help moderate electricity consumption.
Reporting Electricity Disruptions
Any electricity disruptions or abnormalities can be reported via the Tenaga Nasional Berhad CareLine at 15454, through Chatbot SARA on the myTNB portal, or through the company’s official social media accounts on Facebook and X.
