TNB Assures Students Unaffected By Tariff Increase
Author Avatar

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has confirmed that most university students will not experience higher electricity bills following the recent electricity tariff review that took effect last Tuesday. This assurance applies to students who are among the over 23 million domestic electricity consumers in Malaysia.

In its statement, TNB explained that students renting standard residences or staying in residential colleges should not see their electricity costs increase, provided they continue to use electricity within typical consumption patterns.

Opportunities to Save With the TOU Scheme

TNB highlighted the benefits of the Time of Use (ToU) scheme, which offers consumers, including students, opportunities to reduce their electricity bills. By shifting electricity usage to off-peak hours, consumers can enjoy lower tariff rates.

For example, heavy electrical appliances such as washing machines, air conditioners, and computers can be used during off-peak hours to take advantage of these savings. This approach allows students and households to better manage their electricity costs by planning their usage around the ToU schedule.

Special Rebates for Educational Institutions and Community Facilities

TNB stated that both public and private higher education institutions, along with other educational facilities, receive a 10% rebate on electricity tariffs. This rebate also applies to welfare homes and houses of worship.

These rebates are intended to help educational institutions manage operational costs more effectively. By reducing energy expenses, institutions can avoid passing on additional costs to students, supporting their financial well-being.

Energy Efficient Incentive for Domestic Consumers

TNB introduced the Energy Efficient Incentive for domestic consumers who use less than 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month. This initiative encourages households to practice energy-saving habits, which can lead to lower monthly electricity bills.

According to TNB, this incentive not only helps consumers reduce costs but also contributes to Malaysia’s sustainable energy goals by promoting responsible energy use.

RM40 Electricity Bill Rebate Programme for Families in Need

TNB continues to implement the RM40 Electricity Bill Rebate Programme, which provides monthly assistance of up to RM40 for household heads classified as hardcore poor. Eligible recipients are identified through the e-Kasih system under the Prime Minister’s Department.

This programme also benefits student families from the B40 income group, offering additional support to those who may face financial challenges. TNB emphasised that this measure reflects its commitment to protecting the education sector and supporting vulnerable communities.

TNB’s Commitment to National Welfare and Sustainable Energy

TNB reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring the welfare of all Malaysians, including students, while implementing sustainable and responsible reforms to the national energy system. As a key partner in Malaysia’s development, TNB strives to balance affordability, social support, and environmental responsibility.
