Vehicle Sales Rose 8% In July As Pickup Truck Demand Jumped
Author Avatar

New vehicle registrations picked up in July 2026, led by a jump in diesel pickup truck sales. Total industry volume reached 73,615 units, up 5% compared to July last year and 8% higher than June, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

Pickup truck sales alone rose 30% from June. The MAA linked this to the Budi Diesel subsidy announcement on 1 July, which changed how much diesel drivers expect to pay at the pump. July also had a full set of working days, with no long holiday breaks to slow showroom traffic.

Passenger Cars Rose While Commercial Vehicles Fell

Passenger vehicles made up the bulk of July’s sales at 68,900 units, a 7% rise from July 2025. Commercial vehicles, such as lorries and vans, moved in the opposite direction, dropping 16% to 4,715 units.

Here is how July 2026 compares:

Vehicle CategoryJuly 2026Change
Total vehicle sales73,615 unitsUp 5% year-on-year, up 8% month-on-month
Passenger vehicles68,900 unitsUp 7% year-on-year
Commercial vehicles4,715 unitsDown 16% year-on-year
Total sales, January to July458,968 unitsUp 3% year-on-year
Production, July75,490 unitsUp 5% year-on-year

Vehicle production also reached its highest monthly level since January 2024. The MAA said this was mainly thanks to Malaysia’s own car brands, Proton and Perodua. For the first seven months of 2026, factories turned out 432,436 vehicles, a 2% increase over the same period last year.

The Diesel Subsidy Change Is Driving Pickup Demand

The jump in pickup truck sales followed the Budi Diesel announcement on 1 July. Under Budi Diesel, Malaysians with a valid MyKad pay RM2.10 per litre by verifying at the pump, with a basic quota of 200 litres a month. If you own a pickup truck or a four-wheel drive, you can apply through the Budi Madani portal for an extra 100 litres, bringing your monthly quota to 300 litres. Anything above your quota is charged at the full market price.

Work out your monthly diesel use against that 200- or 300-litre quota before you commit. A car loan can run for several years, and your instalment stays the same every month no matter what happens to the quota or the subsidised price later on.

Aggressive Promotions Are Expected To Continue Into August

The MAA said sales should hold their momentum into August 2026, supported by aggressive promotion.

For car buyers, that could mean more discounts and incentives as brands compete for sales. Promotions can come in the form of rebates, free servicing packages, extended warranties, lower booking fees or trade-in top-ups. These vary by brand and model, so compare the overall deal rather than the biggest number on the poster.

Check The Fine Print Before Booking

If you are shopping during a promotion-heavy period, check how long it will take to get the car you want before paying a booking fee. A potential three-month wait could be a problem if you need to replace your current car soon, especially if it is already costing you more in repairs.

Check whether the promotion is tied to a booking date or a registration date. Some offers require the car to be registered before a certain deadline, so booking before the deadline does not necessarily guarantee the rebate. If delivery is delayed, ask the salesperson what happens to the promotion and get the terms in writing.

Finally, check what the discount does to your financing. A RM3,000 rebate on a RM90,000 car reduces the amount you need to borrow, which also lowers the interest you pay over the loan tenure. A free servicing package can save you money on maintenance later, but it does not reduce the amount you borrow.
