WhatsApp has released a native app for Apple CarPlay, replacing what was previously a Siri-only experience on car dashboards. The update is available now through the App Store on iOS, from version 26.13.74 onwards, and appears automatically on the CarPlay interface once an iPhone is connected.
The change is relevant if you drive regularly and rely on WhatsApp to stay in touch, whether for personal use or work. Malaysia’s Road Transport Act prohibits holding or operating a mobile phone while driving, and fines for the offence can run into hundreds of ringgit. A more usable hands-free option reduces the temptation to reach for your phone at the wheel.
The CarPlay app is organised into three tabs. The first shows your recent chat list, with contact names and timestamps, though you cannot open full conversations. The second is a call history log with incoming, outgoing, and missed calls, and lets you call back with a tap. The third tab pulls up your saved favourites from your iPhone, making it quicker to reach the people you contact most.
Message composition works through voice input only. There is no typing interface, which keeps interactions brief and eyes-off-screen.
WhatsApp has confirmed that all messages and calls on CarPlay remain covered by end-to-end encryption, the same as on your phone.
The previous setup required going through Siri entirely, which worked but offered no visual interface. The new app adds chat previews, call logs, and contact shortcuts, which makes it easier to navigate at a glance without holding your phone.
The deliberate limitations, no full chat threads, no typing, are part of how the app is designed to work while driving. The goal is quick, voice-guided interactions rather than full messaging access.
If you already use Apple CarPlay for navigation or music, the WhatsApp app should appear on your dashboard after updating to the latest version. No additional setup is needed.
