The Accountant General’s Department (JANM) held more than RM14 billion in unclaimed money as of September, some of it might be yours. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan told the Dewan Rakyat that the money stays unclaimed partly because owners do not know it exists.
The unclaimed money on eGUMIS includes unpaid salary, dividends, insurance money, fixed deposits, and balances in savings and current accounts. Where does this money come from? Companies and firms hand money they cannot return to an owner to the Registrar of Unclaimed Moneys at JANM.
There is no deadline for claiming and no minimum amount. You can check anytime, and you can recheck whenever you like.
To make a claim, upload the claim form (UMA-7). You can download it from the eGUMIS website. You’ll also need to upload a copy of your MyKad front and back, and the front page of your savings or current account bank book or statement.
If the name or MyKad number you provide doesn’t match JANM’s records, ask the company that transferred the money to JANM for a letter confirming the money is yours. Upload the letter with your claim on eGUMIS.
If the portal asks for original documents, send them within seven working days of applying online. You can take them to a JANM counter or send them by registered post. Payment goes to your bank account within 30 working days after JANM notifies you that your documents have passed. There is no fee and no interest on the money.
If you’re claiming unclaimed money on behalf of someone who has died, you must have legal authority to manage their estate. Being a family member alone is not enough.
You’ll need to submit their death certificate and a Letter of Administration showing that the unclaimed money is part of the estate. You’ll also need to provide a copy of your MyKad and your bank details.
A faraid certificate cannot be used in place of a Letter of Administration.
JANM says it has never appointed an agent to handle unclaimed money, so do not pay anyone to claim for you. For assistance, call 03-8000 8600 or email tuntutan.bwtd@anm.gov.my.
