Android users in Malaysia are getting enhanced fraud protection features within Google Play Protect, announced at Google’s 2026 Online Safety Dialogue on 28 April 2026. The updates are specifically designed to counter malware-enabled fraud rather than general app security threats.
Rather than outright blocking sideloaded apps, Google Play Protect will now inspect in real time the permissions requested by apps during installation. This applies when a user attempts to install an app from an internet-sideloading source such as a web browser, messaging app, or file manager.
The system specifically looks for runtime permissions commonly abused for financial fraud, including reading SMS messages and intercepting one-time passwords. If an app requests these permissions during installation, the installation is blocked and the user is shown an explanation of why it was stopped.
Google is rolling out mandatory Android developer verification, with a requirement that by 2027 all apps on certified Android devices in Malaysia be published by verified developers. Separately, ads promoting financial services will need to be verified by regulators such as Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission Malaysia before running on Google platforms.
As part of the same initiative, the ASEAN Foundation is receiving US$5 million, equivalent to approximately RM19.76 million, from Google for its Scam Ready ASEAN programme. Google’s Be Scam Ready browser game, which teaches users how to identify fraud tactics, will also be made available in Bahasa Malaysia in the third quarter of 2026 after its initial English-only release.
For Android users who want to take an extra step on top of Play Protect, checking suspicious accounts via the Semak Mule portal remains one of the more practical tools available.
