Travelling with your Touch ‘n Go (TNG) eWallet is simple and convenient, letting you pay with QR codes wherever the service is accepted. From everyday purchases to quick snacks on the go, the eWallet makes payments seamless and hassle-free. Before you head overseas, it helps to understand how international transactions work, including fees, limits, and payment options, so you can plan your spending and make the most of your eWallet while abroad.
When you use your TNG eWallet to pay with QR codes abroad, a 1% conversion fee is applied. The app shows this fee in the exchange rate before you confirm the payment, so the total you see is exactly what will be deducted from your eWallet.
When scanning a QR code, the app shows the amount in both the local currency and Malaysian Ringgit, the exchange rate being applied (which includes the 1% fee), and the exact amount that will be deducted from your eWallet balance. This transparency helps you decide whether to use the eWallet or an alternative payment method.
Compared to typical banks or credit cards, which usually charge between 1% and 3% for overseas transactions, TNG’s fee is competitive. This fee only applies in countries where TNG partners with the Alipay+ network. For other transactions, such as purchases made with the TNG Visa card, different fees apply.
The 1% QR payment fee does not apply to purchases made with the TNG Visa card linked to your eWallet. Card transactions abroad carry no foreign exchange markup, though overseas ATM withdrawals are charged RM10, and local withdrawals RM1.40.
TNG eWallet works in over 50 countries through the Alipay+ network. Its strongest coverage is in Asia, including China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, and the Philippines. Beyond Asia, it is also accepted in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Italy, France, and Germany wherever the Alipay+ logo is displayed.
Because the system relies on QR code acceptance, TNG eWallet isn’t as universally accepted as Visa or Mastercard. Travellers should continue carrying a card for locations where Alipay+ is not available.
| Account Type | Wallet Size | Monthly Limit | Annual Limit |
| Lite (Unverified) | RM200 | RM2,000 | RM24,000 |
| Premium (Verified) | RM20,000 | RM120,000 | RM600,000 |
If you plan to spend more abroad, upgrading to a verified Premium account through eKYC will give you access to higher limits.
There are several ways to make the most of your TNG eWallet while keeping costs in check. Using the TNG Visa card instead of QR payments removes the 1% conversion fee on purchases, though ATM withdrawals abroad still carry a small charge. QR payments can be reserved for vendors that don’t accept cards, such as markets or smaller shops. For frequent travellers, comparing alternative payment methods like BigPay or exploring dedicated travel credit cards can also help you find the most cost-effective way to pay abroad.
While you’re planning payments and spending, don’t forget to sort out travel insurance as it can make a big difference if something goes wrong.
